How to Reduce Overwhelm

2024-04-22

Everyone needs a few tricks up their sleeve on this one. And let me tell you, so many of us don’t realize that our coping skills when overwhelmed actually drive up our anxiety and stress, instead of reducing it.

For example, spending a weekend vegging out of the couch seems like a good idea, but in actuality this is an escape from the “threat” of feeling overwhelmed and teaches our nervous system to be even more ramped up about things…not less.

Or, maybe you are someone that starts doing a lot of stuff in a state of perpetual motion. This too, is often a form of escape. Although it’s a little more sneaky, because we are feeling accomplished as we do various tasks. But in actuality, we are yet again teaching our nervous system to be threatened by the present moment, where we are subconsciously feeling the overwhelm of our lives is intolerable.

Overwhelm is not actually intolerable, just very uncomfortable. Dr. Natalie talks in today’s Vlog about how getting into our bodies can be a solution to some of this. Watch and learn.
