It’s the Little Things with Self-Care

2024-04-29

Most of us, when we think of self care, think of things like weekend getaways, eating out with friends, getting our nails done, or buying something for ourselves that we’ve had our eye on for a while. These may in fact be forms of self care for us, yet they are the not the kind of self care your friendly neighborhood therapist is telling you about. When therapists, coaches, and other health and wellness professionals say that we want you to engage in more consistent self care, we are talking about the little things that you do for yourself all the time. The daily habits that add a little energy for you here and there and accumulate into large amounts of restoration when looked at collectively.

Unfortunately, because they are the small things they often get taken for granted. They become part of the background of our lives and are things we will sacrifice easily when we feel crunched for time. What are these things? They are the little bit of time you afford yourself by getting up earlier or going to bed later than the rest of your household to have some time to yourself. Or, the fact that you make time to have healthy food ready and easily accessible to yourself every day, so you aren’t hurting your body or your bank account by eating out a lot. Or, being sure that your sleep is sufficient and that you are getting enough of it every day. There is nothing grand in these forms of self care. However, there is a great deal to lose when we start letting these types of things fall off our radar.

Watch this video as Dr. Natalie speaks on this matter. She aims to help us form new habits around self care and pay more attention to these “little things” in our lives.
