An open letter to midlife women…

My dear sweetheart,

I know exactly how you feel right now. You see it. You know that there are ways that you’ve participated in your own suffering for so long now. You didn’t always get it but you do now. And that’s painful. Honestly it’s excruciating. And there is a helplessness to it. It’s almost as if you don’t think that you would ever be able to overcome these patterns that you’ve got yourself into that are just habits of being you now. How would you ever stop being yourself? Is that even possible?

I’m writing this blog right now because I saw you today. I saw you in your exhaustion. I saw you contemplating returning to work after a holiday season and rinsing and repeating this whole mess again. I saw you wondering, is there ever a New Year’s resolution that really would change your life. I wanted to reach out and tell you, while there is no resolution there is acceptance. And while there is no quick fix, there is a road I’ve taken and many like me have taken that will lead you to more peace. More joy. More content. More of a life that you want instead of a life you feel you have to lead, because it’s what you’ve always done.

I know you think you’ve lost the plot. I know you think it’s impossible to live a life without feeling exhausted and possibly even hating getting up in the morning and doing it all over again. I know you think that pining for an idea of a life that you were sold you “should” have by now is the only way to get your shit together enough to have goals in place to course correct all this. What if I told you you’ve always been on the correct path? What if I told you that designing a life that you want to be in means looking at your life from the perspective that you are exactly where you need to be? What if I told you that exhaustion with recognition that you’ve participated in patterns of behavior that keep you trapped in a life you don’t like is exactly where you should be right now?

I imagine hearing some of those last questions makes you want to smack me across the face and honestly, I understand that. I wanted to smack my own self as I started to recognize these things. I wanted to rage against the machine that had put me in the place where I had meticulously created a life that I was told I “should” have when in fact, it was a life destined to give me grief. What kind of bullshit is that? That you do everything right and you end up in a space where you hate it? It just isn’t fair! But then again who said life was ever going to be fair. No one did.

And I still think that the reward here is recognizing that where you are is not where you want to be. And the helpless feeling makes sense to me and I hope to help you see it makes sense for you. The helplessness is that all the things you’ve learned to do to get yourself out of a pickle in your life won’t work here. Why? Well think about it. If they had worked, wouldn’t you be in a better place already? Of course you would. I know this has never been a problem with effort. I know you’ve started every January 1 with a whole list of things you’re gonna do to fix your life. And yet you end up back in the same exhausted place. Here where you hate it. Here where the life you’re in is not the life you want to be in. Here in your resentment that you’ve done everything right and yet can’t seem to get it right.

My invitation to you is that maybe this is exactly where you need to be. And maybe you needed to be here as many times as necessary to really get the motivation to look at this differently. To see that everything you’ll do from this point forward is going to be brand new and therefore awkward, uncomfortable, and even painful at times. However, the excitement, the hope is that it will bring you to a new place. That on this next stretch, you will be ready to choose differently for yourself. That maybe you’ll even find that you like living in your life or dare I suggest love it. But only if you choose the road less traveled. Only if you go through the doors, you’ve never gone through before. Only if you engage in patterns of behavior that you haven’t even dreamed of having yet.

Have you grown exhausted enough that you’re ready to lay down everything that you know how to do? Are you that tired yet? Are you resentful enough that you’ve done everything right that you’re ready to consider that doing things that way isn’t right for you? Can you feel that very small hope living inside your soul that whispers, “Believe!”

If that’s where you think you are, then let’s begin. Let’s begin designing a new life. A life that you can’t wait to get up for every single day. A life you never knew you could even dream of for yourself. Let’s begin living that life. Let’s let go of the idea that we need to be fixed or improved or find the right goal or engage in the right behavior to finally reach happiness. That has never been how this was going to work. Let’s give all that up and listen to that small voice on the inside. Let’s Believe.

Holding My Breath

As I sit here writing this, I find myself noticing I’m holding my breath. I hate it when I do this. As a child, I recall standing in the kitchen with my parents at the age of 16 discussing as if I was a third adult in the household how we were going to take care of my mother’s parents. I was only 16. And this was not the first time I had been asked to take on a burden well above my pay grade. I am holding my breath right now because recently this whole system of feeling more responsible for others lives than they feel for themselves has reared it’s ugly head for me.

Do any of you do this? Feel almost in a panic when someone else is making bad decisions in their lives? As if it is your responsibility to rush in and save them? It’s a horrible feeling. Almost as if it’s life or death. It’s not a matter of my thinking that I am somehow better equipped than they are to solve this problem, rather I feel almost a pressure that if I don’t fix it for them that I will be the one that’s in trouble. And not just in trouble. I will be so in trouble that it feels like it’s a life or death situation. That is what child parentification does. It doesn’t only steal a childhood, it steals an entire lifetime.

Something that I’ve learned in my healing as an adult, is that much of my growth is actually an unlearning rather than a learning. Or maybe it’s a combination of both. The growth edge is real. Meaning a real effort. Each and every time I find myself feeling compelled to solve someone else’s problems or suffer the consequence of failing them, I have to not only hold compassionate space for myself that this was a job that never should’ve been given to me by my parents, I also have to learn how to cope with watching someone painfully fumble in their life. I was never taught that skill. I was never given the choice to watch someone fail. I was given the responsibility to be their fail safe. And because that was what I was given, it’s robbed me of being able to walk away, set a boundary, take care of myself, without significant effort put into that process.

I wish I had words of wisdom to put on the page here for you. But I don’t. At least not specific instructions for how to make this easier if you are in a similar circumstance. I am here to cheerlead and support you in whatever way you need to work through this growth edge of yours. To heal from the years of being asked to be the one that fixed everything for everyone else. To heal from the absence of being allowed to be a child in your family. To heal from not knowing how to tolerate the distress you feel inside your body every time you watch someone struggle.

Self compassion and self-care are the best means to take on this unlearning and relearning in your life. I’ve done my best to offer resources on my learntoloveyourstory.com website, but honestly mostly what we need as we grow and heal is just to know that we’re not alone. That others have suffered the same way. And just like us, they are muddling through learning to take ownership only of what they need to do for themselves and let go of the impossible task of taking care of everyone around them. And just breathe.

In what areas of your life do you find yourself holding your breath? What next step do you need to take in your healing journey?

The Driveway

I feel it like it’s happening today. Standing in that driveway hugging my son when his friends are calling for him from the car. He keeps assuring me. He’ll be back in a few days and this is no big deal. But it is a big deal. A real big deal.

I can feel the burning behind my eyes when I picture this image. It was the very last day I ever lived in the same home with my son. Shortly after this, he moved in with his father and I moved in with my sister. Divorce is hard and creates situations that you never planned on. He was only 14, about to start high school, and I was no longer going to be the one that he came home to, had dinners with, or who I got to say good night to as I passed his room in the hallway.

But it is a big deal. A real big deal. I can feel the burning behind my eyes when I picture this image. It was the very last day I ever lived in the same home with my son.

This may seem like a minor thing, but it was a major thing for me. I kept asking myself, “how did I get here?“ That’s a rhetorical question now of course, but then I think it was hard for me to see that my shadow side had contributed to the series of events that resulted in my son spending his high school years at his father‘s home and not mine. It wasn’t like he wasn’t seeing me or talking to me, I just wasn’t the parent relegated to cook the dinners and fold the laundry.

As I look back on it now, I know that this was the path I needed to take. It was not the path that I had set out for myself, but it was the path that I was meant to take. I needed to finally face the ways in which I participated in my own suffering. I needed to see my own actions and how they contributed to the dissolution of that life I thought I had chosen for myself. And I needed to really take a good look at whether the goals that I had for myself were goals that I created or goals that were created for me.

I needed to finally face the ways in which I participated in my own suffering. I needed to see my own actions and how they contributed to the dissolution of that life I thought I had chosen for myself.

What did I want anyway? I had no idea. But in the beginning it was just grieving. A lot of grieving. Grieving over a life I had thought I had wanted and thought I had created for myself. Grieving over the life I was not going to get to have with my kid in the same house with me. Grieving over the feeling that I was abandoned once again and could not seem to figure out what love is. Grieving because I was going to need to parent my younger child on my own, which I had not planned. Grieving because I was older now, and I felt like I had wasted huge parts of my adult life.

That driveway. It’s a symbol. It’s a place where a new path began. And in the beginning, I hated that path. I was resentful that I was on it. However, overtime, I have grown to understand the new path was the best path for me. And the best path for my children. And that path has opened up a whole new world for me. A world of self-love. I had to make the decision that I wanted to design a life that I wanted to be in, and design it I have. I’m not done yet, but I am far more committed to myself than I ever have been. The days of grieving have helped me to appreciate what was truly lost in that driveway. I wasn’t losing my son, I was recognizing I had already lost myself. And this path I never would’ve chosen for myself, led me to me. What’s your driveway moment?

What’s your driveway moment?
