Remember when you were a young adult. You had enough experience under your belt to feel in control but not enough to feel the pull of “being comfortable”, taking the “predictable job”, or heaven forbid “settling down”. What happened to that part of you? Where is she now? I think for many of us we willingly set these hopes and dreams aside to start families, pursue careers we weren’t afraid to take risks in, and just because the societal conditioning we were raised in told us “it’s time”.
Now we are entering our midlife and some of the very roles we chose to settle into are changing or even ending. We aren’t raising little kids, but young adults now. And those children are starting their own lives outside of us. Not only that, but about 15% of adult women in the United States are divorced or separated and by midlife that statistic becomes even more haunting. Our lives are different. And we are feeling the stress of this transition. We aren’t sure we are ready to go into the next phase. And we certainly don’t even remember how to have hopes and dreams for ourselves outside of those we serve.
There is a way to take your life back. To return to that risk taking young adult you once were with lofty ideas of what your life would be. It is not too late…in fact this is just the right time. Take a listen to Dr. Natalie’s Vlog on the matter.

I wish I had a penny for every time I felt rushed when they were young, or wanted to get through a frustrating time, or I just wanted some rest. How many of those times were there? Countless. Countless times when I was rushing to get to a game, to pick up a kid, rushing to get to the next thing that I needed to do as their parent. And yet, if I had all that money those pennies add up to right now, I would spend it all for just one more moment with that kid curled up next to me. Just one more moment. There just weren’t enough. Even though there seemed to be so many that I was just struggling to get through at the time.
Parenting a child is a funny thing. No one tells us when we have these children that a little fractal of our hearts break off to become this wonderful little person. In the beginning, this fractal is fragile and it is our job to protect it. And then as this fractal of our heart grows it is our job to shape it, to teach it, and to make sure that it has the values we want it to. And then as this fractal of our heart becomes its own person and grows away from us, we are left here watching a part of us and having almost no ability to do the protecting and shaping that we once did. It leaves us feeling raw. It leaves us wondering what next. It leaves us with a hole in our hearts, but not one that was put there against our will…one that was left there by our choice.
I’m sure you feel this too, as you watch this beautiful young soul that you have cared for graduate and start a new phase of their life. It just doesn’t seem imaginable. Yet it is. And you are at these graduation ceremonies and parties, just standing in disbelief next to this person that looks like an adult, while all you can see is the small child you still adore. Who told them they could grow up so fast? Who said that was ok? It certainly wasn’t you. You are left with just the notion that your job is now done. But what next?
I know your grief. I am experiencing it too. And it’s so weird how we moved from wanting to just get past the monotony of it all, into longing for even one day of the worst of it again. And that’s where we find ourselves in times like these. With a whole mixed bag of emotions that we’re just not quite sure how to handle. We want to cry, because we know that we will miss it all so much. We know that we’re also so proud of them that it seems almost impossible to contain all of this love and admiration inside of us. We can’t tell enough people how wonderful they are and how we would be their biggest fan even if we hadn’t raised them. They are just so amazing to us.
Yet, what are we going to do with the space…the void that shows up in the wake of their growing up and moving on with their lives? What will we do with all the time, with all the love, with all that we still want to give them? What will we do? We have spent the better part of two decades or more taking care of them. We know how it is to be in the role of their parents and caregivers, yet we’re not so certain what our role is now. Not to mention it doesn’t seem fair that a part of our heart is just walking around in the world without us. How is it even possible that we will survive not knowing all the time what’s happening? Not being able to save them from all of the bad that we can see in the world? Not sharing in all of their joy going forward? It just doesn’t seem fair that a part of our heart is in their‘s, yet we will never have the intimate front row seat to their life in the way we have up until now.
There’s really only one thing that we can do. And that is to take care of the heart that fractal left. It may not seem like what we think we should do, yet it is the only thing within our power to do. We must take care of our own hearts. We must grieve and then we must keep moving forward and enjoying this beautiful life that is still connected to ours. If we stay too long in our longing, in our regret, in our missing what once was, we risk missing the enjoyment of the person they are now. This young adult that we are growing to love. Just remember that neither of us know how this works. We are all on the growth edge of a new relationship with one another.
Here’s the truth of it. Since we cannot go with them and will not be in their lives the way that we have up until now, we must learn to take care of the heart where that fractal left. It is our job to take care of ourselves. To learn what it’s like to be the parent or caregiver of this young adult. It is our job to find our way in this new world that we find ourselves in. It is our job to love ourselves and in so doing transmit the love in our heart to that fractal, however far away it may be.
So take care of yourselves, my story lovers. Take care of the one that took care of them for this long. Take care.
Have you ever tried to get somewhere without using your GPS or a map? How’d you do? Probably not well. Most of the time we are all pretty good about looking at the map, using the GPS, reading the instructions, etc. But when it comes to our lives, we mostly are just winging it or following the path set for us by society, family, religion, or culture. It is very infrequent that we seek out professional help from a coach or clinician, unless we have gotten stuck and need a boost. Dr. Natalie suggests that we access help sooner, almost like we are consulting with a map maker to help us set up the map to a better life. Take a look and see what you think of this idea.
“I know better!” How many times have you uttered those words? And how many times have you been frustrated, angry, maybe even a little rageful that you did it again anyway? You are in good company my friend, because we all have been caught in that cycle.
The question really is how to get out of the cycle. I have been asked this so many times in my practice that I recognize that this is a learning opportunity for all of us, not just those in therapy. The truth of the matter is this is part of our human wiring, based in our brain. We repeat old behavior patterns when we aren’t even thinking about it. Why do you ask? Because our brain thinks for us.
That’s right! Our brain has a way to rewire itself so that it can do things without even asking our conscious awareness for input. So pesky patterns first develop from a behavior we thought met a particular need. We repeated the behavior enough that now our brain does it despite our “knowing better.”
Want to learn how to rewire your brain and stop these pesky patterns? Watch the video below.
Where are the role models for women? Especially those in midlife. Who are we to look up to as the ideal for living our best life once we hit that “certain” age? Its like there are no narratives in our culture for how to be “killing it” at our age. So what are we to do?
Watch Dr. Natalie’s vlog on this issue and her suggestion for how we start to re-write our stories, so that we learn to love the narratives for women in midlife, instead of fighting against the narrow stories that our culture, families, and religions have handed to us. She helps us to understand how in having very few narratives in our culture that guide us on how to be living our BEST mid-LIFE as women, we are actually lead to believe we are not good enough. She offers us a tip on how to start and re-write our own narratives and learn to love our stories.

One of the single most devastatingly undermining stories we tell ourselves is that we are not good enough. The worst part of this is how it is held in place by culture…particularly marketing that is seeking to create a pain point of your being not good enough in order to sell you on the idea that a product may make you good enough. All of it is a giant fallacy, yet one that has real life consequences on our sense of self-worth or lack of it. Listen to Dr. Natalie talk on this issue and offer a tip on how to crawl out of this rut and into feeling better about ourselves.
Dr. Natalie breaks down in today’s blog why story is such a powerful healing tool. Did you know that story telling was likely the first form of therapy? Really! We sat around a fire and talked to one another, sharing our wisdom, pain, goals, regrets, etc. and felt healed by the experience. We wrote on cave walls to help others see what we had learned illustrated for them. And think about how we teach our kids…story! Take a look at the Vlog to learn more.
Did you know that how you preserve your time and energy is as important to your self care regimen as the kinds of things you do to restore and replenish yourself? Well it is! And you should be just as focused on how your self care routine has time for rest and preservation as it does for restoration and replenishment.
Dr. Natalie walks us through why these limits are important in her latest Vlog for the Learn to Love Your Story series.

Many times when we find ourselves in a struggle, we are fighting not only the issue at hand, but the programming and conditioning underneath this that tells us there is a “right” and “wrong” way that we somehow seem to be on the “wrong” side of. Dr. Natalie helps walk us through a way to figure out what the underlying programming and conditioning is, by asking ourselves “What rule tells me I need to be struggling here?”, and then deciding if that rule really serves us or not. Take a look.
Have you ever had one of those Mondays…or just one of those days in general, when you feel like the universe is imploding on you? Like dominoes, one bad thing happening after another. This is not an accident. And not for the reason you think.
Confirmation bias is how our brain tries its best to make things easier on us, by limiting what it is paying attention to. I mean really…if you were paying attention to all of what you are perceiving at any given moment, you wouldn’t get out the door. All the smells, sounds, and sights in just the space your in right now are enough to keep you occupied for a few minutes…right.
So the brain uses this confirmation bias thing to help you only pay attention to the things that it thinks will benefit you the most at any given time. Now, if you are in a bad mood, guess what those things are? You guessed it…its only looking for the next bad thing to happen and what it expects to see it will start to find my friends. You will always find things to be upset with if that is what you are looking for.
Here is a tip on how to deal with a case of the Mondays…Dr. Natalie breaks down in this vlog a strategy for managing through this.
The wound is the place where the light enters you.

There is a tradition in Japanese culture, whereby broken pottery is reassembled using gold as the adherent in the cracks between broken pieces. The flaw thereby becomes a part of the beauty of the object as it ages. Its a part of the pottery’s history and by being treated with gold, shows that this part of the history has a high value.
It’s an interesting concept to think of our hardships and brokenness as the most valuable parts of us. So true though. What I really like about this Japanese tradition is that gold is used in the repairing. So, the beauty only “shines” when the repairs are done. I have been a psychologist over the course of two decades and I have helped others and watched as they have healed. The beauty that emerges is inspiring to me. And I mean inspiring.
I too have had my share of difficult times and one of the unique aspects of being with others during their healing journeys is that I am privy to the knowledge that this too shall pass and I could be all the better for that. I just have to let the pieces fall and then pick them up and mend them with the gold of self-compassion. This work can be tedious and many times pain staking. It’s still so worth the effort.
What is self-compassion you may ask? Well compassion’s literal translation is to “suffer with”. In action, compassion usually is a conscious awareness of another’s suffering, paired with a desire to try to share the pain with this individual in an effort to alleviate it. To have this same empathic quality towards oneself, is to see yourself through the lens of loving kindness with the knowledge that the human condition is flawed and your mistakes are an aspect of that humanity. To love yourself despite your faults. To see with this lens does not negate that negative things have occurred, the wounds have left scars, or that healing has come at a cost. Instead it allows us to see the beauty in these scars. The mending of the old wounds has left us with a different kind of beauty. The process of self-compassion and compassion towards others lets us see the beauty in our own collective human condition, flaws and all.
Investing in ourselves is the most important work we will ever do, because without that investment there isn’t much in us to be shared with the world, no matter how much we want to. My challenge to you is to notice where your broken pieces are and take time to carefully pick them up so that you too can start your repair work. Take this loving approach of seeing the beauty in the places where you feel broken and adding the gold of self-compassion to adhere these broken pieces into the whole of you. Let the flaws of your life shine through and tell us of your real beauty.
