This episode explores the emotional shock many midlife women feel when they drop a child off at college and come home to a quieter house. Dr. Natalie reframes empty nesting as more than just missing a child – it can be a loss of role, identity, and a long-standing way of getting needs met. She also connects this transition to grief, self-worth, caregiving patterns, and the need to build a new relationship with yourself as kids become independent.

Quotes:
“The reward for being a good parent is that they’re gonna eventually not be in our lives every day.”
“The person you’re gonna pick up and caretake for the rest of your life, that’s you.”
“Self-abandonment is not a great way to manage grief and loss.”
“What hurts is not just the child leaving, but the loss of being needed.”
The inner critic often shows up when you’re trying something new.”
“The work now is building a relationship with yourself.”
Key topics:
Empty nesting can feel intolerable because it is not only separation, it is a major identity disruption.
Dr. Natalie says many women are grieving the loss of the mom role, not just the child leaving home.
If self-worth has been tied to being a “good mom,” empty nesting can trigger a crisis of identity.
Some women have also used parenting as the main way they have ever felt loved, which makes the transition even harder.
Parenting may have functioned as a coping strategy to numb old wounds, especially for women who grew up in emotionally barren families.
Her central message is that the path forward is building a relationship with yourself through reflection, counseling, new friendships, and honest self-inquiry.

Summary In this episode, Dr. Natalie explores the concept of ‘The Great Unlearning,’ a transformative journey that challenges the societal belief that doing everything right leads to a fulfilling life. She reflects on her personal experiences, particularly during midlife, where she realized that striving for perfection and external validation often leads to burnout and disillusionment. Dr. Natalie emphasizes the importance of self-worth and the need to reclaim it from within, rather than through external achievements or approval. Through poignant anecdotes, she illustrates how the pressure to conform to societal expectations can lead to a double life and emotional turmoil, ultimately advocating for a shift towards self-love and acceptance.
Dr. Natalie introduces the metaphor of the tugboat versus the lighthouse to illustrate the difference between exhausting oneself in the pursuit of perfection and standing firm in one’s self-worth. She encourages listeners to reflect on their own lives, identifying where they may be sacrificing their well-being in the name of doing everything right. The episode serves as a powerful reminder that true fulfillment comes from within, and that midlife can be an opportunity for profound personal growth and self-discovery.

Takeaways: The version of you that you’re most proud of may be blocking your actual life. Midlife can be an invitation to examine the mess of our lives and love it as it is. Reclaiming self-worth from the inside out is essential for true fulfillment.
Sound bites: “What if I told you that the version of you that you’re most proud of… is in the way of your actual life?” “Today we’re gonna talk about the great unlearning.” “You do not need to fix yourself. You just need to find yourself.”

Special Interview with Dream Coach, Debbie Spector Weisman
In this episode of Midlife Crisis to a Centered Life Thriving, Dr. Natalie interviews Debbie Spector Weisman, a dream life coach. Debbie discovered the power of dreams through a dream that changed her own life, where she realized she was using a metaphorical ‘codpiece’ to protect herself and hide from the world. This realization led her to break out of her shell and become more self-expressive. Debbie emphasizes the importance of paying attention to dreams and how they can provide valuable insights and solutions to pressing problems and discusses using dreams for creativity and healing.
Dream coaching can help bring self-awareness and access internalized wisdom. Dreams can provide insights into health issues, premonitions, and lucid dreaming. Dream incubation is a process where you program yourself to dream about a specific topic or question. Taking action on dream insights can lead to personal growth and problem-solving. Dream work is a practical tool that can be used by anyone. It is important to believe in the power of dreams and trust in your own abilities.

If you had $86,400 and someone stole $10, would you throw $86,390 away for revenge? Or move on and live? Right?!? Move on and live. Here is the thing though, you have 86,400 seconds each day. Don’t let someone’s negative 10 seconds ruin the remaining 86,390. Life is bigger than that. And so are you.
– Unknown Author
I saw this quote once on social media and found it to be very compelling. How many of us do this? We know this isn’t good for us and yet feel we can’t stop ourselves from letting the small amount of negativity in our lives overwhelm us, as if this is the majority of our lives when it really is not.
My challenge for you…try this to start practicing Mindfulness. Help yourself stop the madness created by these old patterns of perseverating on the negative. You may have heard of Mindfulness and still be skeptical this practice can be helpful. It can though. It orients us to ourselves and our world of the present moment only. It allows space for us to let go of things we can’t control by shifting our focus to the present.
Let me demystify one of the reasons why Mindfulness works. When we pay attention to something research shows again and again that it changes our behavior. One of my favorite examples of this is from quantum physics. Get a load of this:
“In a study reported in the February 26, [1998] issue of Nature (Vol. 391, pp. 871-874), researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science…conducted a highly controlled experiment demonstrating how a beam of electrons is affected by the act of being observed. The experiment revealed that the greater the amount of “watching,” the greater the observer’s influence on what actually takes place.”
What does this mean? It means at the smallest subatomic levels of the energy that makes up what EVERYTHING is made of (such as the electrons focused on in this study), there is research showing us that the act of observing can indeed cause change AND the more we observe the more influence we have. Isn’t that amazing? Just the act of noticing something influences it…changes it.
So here are 3 steps I have for you to try and change the pattern of giving up so much of your time to the negative thoughts in your life:
Notice your thoughts. That’s it! Just take on the role of the observer and notice the thoughts that you’re having.
Describe the thoughts to yourself. This could be out loud, in your head, or written down, like in a journal.
Take a non-judgmental stance. This means don’t be hard on yourself for what you notice you’re thinking. Don’t critique, just notice and name. Nothing more.
Think you can do this over the course of the week? I hope you try. I promise that a practice this small can make big ripples of change in your life. Take five minutes once a day and give yourself the gift of seeing your thoughts as separate from you. You are the observer of the thoughts. You are not the thoughts themselves. See if the act of observing is as powerful as they say it can be on a subatomic energetic level. It may surprise you.

People are so ready in recent years to feel “normal” since the pandemic turned our worlds upside down. And yet, we can’t quite figure out how to put things back together like they were. We notice that we are more stressed and still feeling a bit off center. Where is the stress coming from? We get to go back to our offices, schools, and regular lives right? Then why is this so hard?
I love this question! Remember though, I am a Clinical Psychology and Neurology nerd…so this is the kind of stuff that I get excited to demystify. There is a very good reason we are feeling this way. And I have talked about this before on a Vlog I am sharing here. Take a look and listen up for my tips on how to get through this and build up your resiliency skills.
In this Vlog I help us to see how the pandemic impacted our nervous systems and created a high amount of stress in our lives, even as we think we have come out the other side of this ordeal. I strive to decode for you how the nervous system actually works and why it is that both positive and negative experiences in our lives can tax our capacity to cope and care for ourselves.
This “how to” Vlog also has tips on how to expand our window of tolerance and build up our resiliency factors, so that we can better manage our stress. Enjoy.
One of the more inconvenient realities of perfectionism is how it destroys women over time. We don’t want to acknowledge this, yet I feel compelled to use my platform to make known this shadow side of perfectionism. The high rates of depression in women during midlife, the steep spike in heart related disease and deaths, and the dispensable nature of women in business, families, and communities when they hit midlife all speak to this phenomenon. Women strive for perfection as a means to try and cling to their worth according to society, culture, family, and religion. And yet, this method is slowly killing us.
If a woman uses perfectionism throughout her lifetime as a means to create social currency, the true cost to herself is her body, her mind, and her soul. The true cost to society, on the other hand, is that she is unable to share the full capacity of all of her gifts and over time as we cripple more and more women with this perfectionistic ideal we all lose out on the gifts that this collective group could have given us. It’s hard to know what the losses really are, since it is hard to know what life would have been like had these women lived to their full potential. In essence, we cannot know what we have not experienced.
I happen to disagree with that last statement. I think that we can know what we have not experienced, or at least that we can see glimpses of it when women shed their corsets of perfectionism and live into their authenticity. When we see this we are always in awe and often inspired. I think of the recent book, Untamed, by Glennon Doyle, or the short story written by Keah Brown called Never Too Much in the Anthology You Are Your Best Thing: Vulnerability, Shame Resilience, and the Black Experience edited by Tarana Burke and Dr. Brené Brown.
These two women, Glennon and Keah, share with us their own journeys of wrestling through being the version of themselves the world wanted them to be, in order to live into being the women they authentically are. The reason that testimonies like these inspire us is because we can see ourselves in them. We long to be the people that break the old patterns of being the versions of ourselves that we believe others want for us and becoming the versions of ourselves that we desire to be.
So how do we break these patterns? How do we show up differently in the world? Where do we even begin to fight back the magnitude of how perfectionism, in particular, holds us back? These are great questions. And the answers to them are individual to each of us. Our journey to authenticity is one that will be unique to our individual lived experience, yet one that will be uniquely beneficial to all of us. This paradigm of taking our own heroines journey in order to become the version of ourselves the world needs, lays out just how complicated this venture will be.
As a Clinical Psychologist and an expert in helping women transition in midlife, I would say that the first step in your journey is always becoming more self-aware. Aware of how perfectionism has held you back. Learning how staying small in body, mind, and action as the “perfect woman“ has limited us to a small cage in our lives. And the worst part, acknowledging the cage was never locked from the outside so much as it was locked by our own adherence to perfectionistic ideals from within. This is a hard self realization and one that will require significant amounts of self compassion.
This would not be a journey I would tell you to enter into lightly. Instead, I would encourage you to find the resources that you need in order to practice that self compassion while coming to the self awareness that you have participated in your own suffering by aspiring to the perfectionistic ideals of culture, society, family, and religion. I would also strongly encourage doing so in community with other women who are also taking on this challenge. One of the ways that women excel is in our ability to combine resources and support with one another, and in so doing transcend our own limitations by networking with the strengths of others. What better scenario to do this in than while we journey out of perfectionism?
I strongly urge you to join us at Learn to Love Your Story, exploring the ways that we can lean into our authenticity and away from the social conditioning to which we’ve grown accustomed. You can start by joining our mailing list, listening to the podcasts, reading the blogs, and joining us for events when they come up that seem to most resonate for you. Share this journey with other like minded women. Give yourself the huge gift of showing up differently and letting go of these old patterns of suffering.

Do you have that feature set on your phone where it prompts you every week to see what pictures you were taking this time last year? And then if you want you can go back as far as you have pictures to check out this week 2 years ago, 3 years ago, 4 years ago, 5 years ago, etc? I have that feature turned on and it is honestly the most keen window into my transition over the last several years. I can’t believe sometimes where I was even a year ago, but when I look back more than 5 years ago it is a whole other ball game. You see, my second marriage hit its lowest points at that time, so it can be an interesting lens into my past to scroll through those pictures.
I was clearly at my worst. I could not believe I had failed at marriage twice, that I was facing financial collapse, and becoming a single mom yet again in my life. Yet, at the same time I was swimming along well in my work at a group practice without skipping a beat. That’s me, though. Work is a refuge away from the chaos the rest of my life has been. I learned that from my father. It has its advantages, but it also has its drawbacks, let me tell you. I can overwork to the point of blocking out everything in my life and that is not a good thing.
So it is strange as I embark on this new journey with Learn to Love Your Story I am pulling back from work. Guess what? This old dog can learn some new tricks. And this one has been a LONG time coming. Its only been recently when I finally figured out that if I want a different outcome FROM my work life, I will need to be different IN my work life. You see, up until this point I figured I could always add work. Right?!? I have energy for that. I have learned to straddle 3 or more jobs at once and be a decent single parent, so why can’t I add a side hustle too. And I did. If you look at my photos this time last year or the year before, there are dozens of thumbnails I made to post to the Learn To Love Your Story You Tube channel, as I was churning out video after video. Not as many inspirational quote screen shots as there were 4 or 5 years ago, when I was still climbing out of despair, or pictures of my kids as there were a few years ago when we were making the most of being outside that summer post COVID social distancing for the first few months.
So why in the world do I have to back down from my work to jump into my new endeavor? Because it needs my attention and not my work ethic. It needs me to live in the experience, not just get through it. A few years ago, I thought I was starting this off right and took an 8 month course to teach me how to best launch the program I was creating. And I was hustling that. I was posting videos, providing free classes, being present on social media, and starting email funnels. What I wasn’t doing was enjoying myself. I was pounding out the work, which has always been a way to drown out the noise of everything else in my life. And even though it was not my intention to use the work to escape my life, because this has been such a well trodden path in my past there was no other destination that road was going to take me to.
I started noticing that I was overworking and still was feeling pretty stuck in it all. I finally started to put the pieces together on what to do next. I needed to design a life I wanted to be living IN. Not hustle for my worth by overworking to sustain a life I could barely enjoy. While this is a familiar pattern, it was not serving me any longer. And that is now my chief concern in life. I practice what I preach. I am on a daily mission to put myself first, because I know that means all the things I put myself into get the best version of me. My kids. My family. My friends. My clients. My peers. And more importantly this beautiful new endeavor of LearnToLoveYourStory.com, which is the most aligned my work and purpose in life have ever been.
So what’s next? And what does that mean for you? It means that this is my priority and I will put my heart and soul into it, instead of just my time and intellect. I think the combination will flower into something really special. And, I know the net result will make the world a better place from my little corner of the universe.

Let me tell you what I know about how hard it is to be a woman in midlife right about now. IMPOSSIBLE!!! And yet you don’t see any of us falling down like flies. NOPE…we are all in survival mode. A BEAST MODE if I’ve ever seen one and a mode that we have been in for more years of our lives than we would like to admit. Right now this survival mode is even more apparent as we try to make the impossible decisions of how to care for everyone else in our lives in this post-pandemic world. Whether we are caretakers or not, we are nurturing and this whole mess has us in a bad position.
For starters, we are no where near out of this COVID thing and that means we are no where near normal (whatever that means). The backlash of having had our lives turned upside down is the sister pandemic of a subsequent mental health crisis we are no in. I Vlogged (see the video below) on this very issue at the start of this pandemic…it is hard and we are not going to come out the other side the same. We can’t. We will be forever changed by this experience.
I worry about women in midlife. We have no idea how this is going to affect us in the long run. And guess what, after all the waves of the physical illness are finally over…really over…no variants left and the whole thing under control…that is when people will start coming out of the emotional survival mode that they have been in since the start of this. So we have no idea what that fallout will look like, and I promise you we have not done the preparations for this. You thought not having enough PPE at the start of the pandemic for the front line workers was bad? Just wait until people are in mental health crisis and we learn how under staffed the mental health field is. Not to mention the fact that SO MANY people do not have the access to mental health resources or will not use these resources because of the stigma attached to “mental health” problems.
Sure we have had moments when we peeked out of the survival mode that we are in. Losing our $&#% on someone in traffic, at our family, or at that neighbor that is just driving us nuts. Yet, for the most part, we have been emotionally numb…what psychologists call dissociation. I wrote a blog and made a video (see below) on this subject not too long ago as well. Dissociation is the form of survival mode when we play dead. In the wild we see this when the gazelle gets caught by the lioness. It plays dead in the hopes that the lioness will let the gazelle go and move on for another kill. Meanwhile, the gazelle may have ONE LAST CHANCE of survival by waking up just enough to run away again. This is where we are at. We are the gazelle. We are playing dead, being real still and hoping as hard as we can that COVID will go away and things will be normal again (whatever that means).
So what does all this have to do with why I am afraid for women in midlife right now? Because so many women in midlife live a great deal of their adult existence in survival mode…and this is when there IS NOT a worldwide pandemic. We step up to the socially appropriate roles that we have been given, as pretty to look at, as caregivers and nurturers, as team players and not necessarily leaders (always the bridesmaid but never the bride). Yet we shy away from our own inner voices on how we should be in the world. Midlife is usually the natural time of transitions that land women in midlife square in the position to be coming into their own and moving out of the corsets of socially accepted roles. These transitions are difficult in their own right…not always crises, yet challenging enough. And you guessed it…going through COVID overshadowed this whole kitten caboodle and then added a crap ton more stress right on top of it.
When we come to the point when the physical illness portion of the pandemic comes under some form of control, midlife women are going to be under a level of duress that is likely to LEVEL them! This is what I am worried about it. It is why I created LearnToLoveYourStory.com. I knew there would not be enough therapists in the world or access to those therapists to save us all. We need more venues to gain access to the help we are going to need on the other side of this. Not to mention we are going to need each other…a community of women suffering in the same way, who know what its like and are equipped to lift one another up.
That’s where my Online Course and Coaching Programs will come in real handy. I designed my programs with just this purpose in mind. Ready made groups of women learning the skills of how to pivot through any life transition, courses that guide you on how you can do this at your own pace, and even individual coaching for those that want that personal touch through their growth process. “People get used to anything. The less you think about your oppression, the more your tolerance for it grows. After a while, people just think oppression is the normal state of things. But to become free, you have to be acutely aware of being a slave.”
Assata Shakur
In many ways my coaching programs focus on the subject of self-liberation. I find this term more closely represents the coaching program I have set up through Learn to Love Your Story than any other term I have tried using. Self-empowerment, Personal Development, Growth Mindset, Life Transition Expertise…none of these fully capture what I am getting at in my programs. What I really am seeking to do is help free people from the tyranny of the stories they have told themselves and the stories that have been told to them that make them feel small, unheard, and unseen in their lives. And in the worst cases like they have somehow failed. All of these stories are lies that have been told to us and that we are telling to ourselves that hold up the interests of the powers that be. And it turns out a lot of those powers don’t serve us. A LOT!!!
Midlife in many ways is a second adolescence. One in which we gear up to take on the establishment and find our way in this world again. You remember middle school right? That Lord of the Flieshellhole where we figured out our rank in the social pecking order and sold our souls to the devil of “fitting in”. That period of time is one of the most hellacious we go through. We are ill prepared for the battle we face. A battle of trying to be something we are not, in an effort to be accepted. This is where the most difficult social conditioning occurs and we are at such an impressionable time in our lives. Our brains are only starting to formulate the blueprints for our lives and instead are getting filled with crap intel from the treacherous halls of our middle school existence. YUCK!
Well guess what?!? If you are in this glorious stage we call midlife you are right back in that craziness again. Your social currency is fading. You aren’t as young, you’re body is not the same, and your social pecking order is changing right out from underneath you whether you want it to or not. This can be one of the most uncomfortable phases of life. Here we are again trying to make a place for ourselves in this world, trying to belong, while the world is telling a story of how we are inconsequential. So what do we do? We rebel as any good midlife adolescent would. We have a midlife crisis. We try to reinvent ourselves. And sometimes this works for us, but sometimes it can all feel like it comes crashing down on us.
One of my favorite liberation quotes is by American Writer and 1960s Activist, James Baldwin, “It took many years of vomiting up all the filth I’d been taught about myself and half-believed before I was able to walk on the earth as though I had a right to be here.” That about sums it up, right? When we are so indoctrinated in the social conditioning of who we “should” be, we really start to believe the BS that who we are is not good enough. This is especially true in times of transition such as midlife. Here is my advice to all of us…LET THAT SHIT GO!!!
“It took many years of vomiting up all the filth I’d been taught about myself and half-believed before I was able to walk on the earth as though I had a right to be here.”
James Baldwin
Another quote by Comedian, Writer, and Producer Amy Poehler explains how hard “letting go” can be for women, “It takes years as a woman to unlearn what you have been taught to be sorry for.” What this demonstrates is that it is so much harder than just letting it go. It takes another approach entirely. It takes a personal journey of liberating oneself from the culture that has taught us who we are is something to be apologized for in the first place. We have to shed the years of our conditioning that taught us there is an ideal that we are supposed to be working towards and emulating, instead of reveling in the absolute miracle that is us. I mean think about it! You are the only version of you that is like you. THE ONLY ONE. That means in the nearly 8 billion lives on earth right now, no one is just like you. NO ONE. Not even if you are a twin or multiple. Not to mention there has never been and never will be a you just like you, in the billions of lives that have been and ever will be. That is an amazing FACT!
“It takes years as a woman to unlearn what you have been taught to be sorry for.”
Amy Poeler
LIBERATE yourself from this idea that family, religion, culture, and society have given you about what the ideal version of who you should be is. How do they know? How could they know? There is ONLY ONE YOU! How in the world would they know what the worthy version of you is? Quick answer…they don’t. So liberate yourself from this idea that your “best self” is learned from others or that the answer is somewhere outside yourself. Its learned from you. The answer is in you. You only need to liberate yourself to find it.
Anxiety is one of the toughest emotional health issues out there. I know because I have not only helped many clients, supervisees, and employees with it…I have dealt with this fine friend in my own personal life.
Anxiety is quite common and quite commonly overlooked. We call it stress, restlessness, apprehension, worry, attention problems, and nervousness among many other names. We try to downplay its hold in our life or disguise it with all the shiny objects we can find, like staying on top of things at home with our families or in our careers. We busy ourselves with the work of being “busy” in order to hide away from our anxiety. Sound familiar?
And when all else fails to help us alleviate our burden, then we seek out biological means to calm the central nervous system. And what does that mean? It usually comes in the form of overeating, drinking alcohol, spending time online, watching a lot of TV, shopping, etc, etc.
So guess what? We all have had anxiety at one time or another. Let’s stop pretending it’s not our problem. Let’s stop covering it up. And for sure let’s stop denying it’s there, because the more we do the bigger it gets. Anxiety will not be denied it’s place in our life.
Let me suggest something that is completely unorthodox. First off, you should know that anxiety is one of the most treatable emotional health issues around, because we know how the brain and nervous system work. We can really learn to help ourselves by merely changing our thinking and behaviors. Easier said than done, I get it. Believe me, I’ve lived it. Yet I have to say it’s a good thing that anxiety is so responsive to talk therapy and taking control of our thinking and behaving, because there isn’t enough nervous system depressants in the world to combat the levels of anxiety that are out there for just the most normal of day to day living. Then layer on COVID!
So here is the unorthodoxy…try making friends with your anxiety. Try understanding it better. Try to even listen to what the anxiety’s message is to you. And believe me, it wants to tell you something. It really does have a message.
Think of your anxiety as a teenager living in your home. Teens are often infuriating in our lives, yet we love them dearly too. Many times the issue is a break down in communication. We aren’t hearing them or we are not listening to the right things to better understand their perspective. There is always a rhyme to the reason of Anxiety (and of our teens). I’m not saying that the reason is always the most logical, yet there is always something that anxiety thinks it’s helping us with by being present.
So make friends with your anxiety. Listen. Notice. And as always, stay curious. Help anxiety meet its needs, without it being at your expense.

Do you ever feel like you are just not getting where you want to be in your life? Like you have worked so very hard, yet still feel like you are just treading water, not seeing the change you want to? Maybe you’re stuck. And, of course, there are all of these pesky life transitions that just keep happening to you that are making you feel uncomfortable. Did you know that on average we have a big life transition about every year and a half and in our lifetimes we will go through about five major life transitions, like marriage/divorce, having kids, career changes, or moving? Well its true. Life change is part of the deal when it comes to being human.
Lucky for you, here at LearnToLoveYourStory.com we are ALL ABOUT helping you get unstuck and navigate these life transitions. And honestly, not just manage these uncomfortable feelings better, we want you to be able to pivot out of any difficult barrier in your life and learn to really love your life…your whole story…no matter what change comes your way.
The first step to this is enhancing your ability to know yourself. Self-compassionate awareness is key to any kind of change process, especially one in which you want to be more of a change agent for yourself. A great place to start is remembering how you have navigated difficult things you have already been through. Let’s take stock of the many things you have already done well and how you can tell that you are already a lean, mean, changing machine.
One deficit of Western culture’s social programming is that it teaches us that our negative emotions are things to be avoided, pushed away, gotten past, or gotten over. These more uncomfortable emotions are great messengers and teachers for where change is needed. They are uncomfortable precisely because they are predictors of where change is needed and sometimes even what kind of change is needed. As you contemplate how you have navigated these things in the past, pay attention to what the uncomfortable feelings in these experiences really taught you. Asking yourself, “What did these emotions tell me about what I needed to do next?” and ”Did I listen?”
Learn to listen to the language of your intuitive body/mind’s behavior and better hear what it is directing you to do next. If you can learn to non-judgmentally take stock of the stuck places you get into, by listening to the uncomfortable feeling of being stuck without judging it, you allow yourself the freedom of really learning what that negative emotion has come to teach you. I promise that experience is trying to tell you what move to make next, by creating discomfort in the place you are at. Its saying, “Don’t stay here…this hurts.”
And don’t worry, you aren’t supposed to know the exact move to make next. You just know that touching that specific spot hurts, which is your body/mind’s way of saying, “Move on.” Listen to this. Learn the lesson the discomfort is teaching you. And then do the next right thing in your life.

Healing is an interesting subject for many. Its so ethereal. Hard to really define and understand. Especially emotional healing. What I am talking about when I talk about healing is not creating a reality where the pain and suffering never existed, but rather defining healing as a means to help you transcend that pain and suffering so the damage it left is no longer controlling your life. Life can be hard and the weight of it heavy. The marks it leaves are real and the pain creates a lasting memory, for which our bodies keep the score. I want to give you a means to move beyond all of these scars and let go of the weight.
Healing doesn’t discount your story. Healing cannot cancel out the damage from your life. Healing is the process by which we disarm all of this. A few weeks back I shared a blog about a Japanese tradition whereby gold is used to repair the broken pieces of an item, thus infusing it with more worth. That’s what healing does. It gives us more worth.
One of the means by which I teach others how to heal, is by taking something that was once harmful towards us and turning it into a strength we have to better navigate our life. Almost like a super power. How is this done? Well, one way to do this is to shift the narrative of your life. This is useful when you cannot change the storyline, but most definitely want to change how the story affects you.
In a Vlog earlier this week, I spoke to how you can shift your narrative by rethinking it through the lens of being your own Hero/ine. Taking the storyline of struggle and reorganizing it through a lens of being Hero/ine moves the power back to us. I love empowerment strategies like this. So much of what we struggle with is feeling powerless to the things that happen in our lives. Once we start looking at it through the lens of being our own Hero/ine, we regain some control and inevitably start to feel more powerful.
What’s your super power? What strength have you built through healing? Think about it. Sometimes it can take years to get this perspective, but it is there. And you can seize upon it. Go ahead…be your own Hero/ine.
