It’s the Little Things with Self-Care

Most of us, when we think of self care, think of things like weekend getaways, eating out with friends, getting our nails done, or buying something for ourselves that we’ve had our eye on for a while. These may in fact be forms of self care for us, yet they are the not the kind of self care your friendly neighborhood therapist is telling you about. When therapists, coaches, and other health and wellness professionals say that we want you to engage in more consistent self care, we are talking about the little things that you do for yourself all the time. The daily habits that add a little energy for you here and there and accumulate into large amounts of restoration when looked at collectively.

Unfortunately, because they are the small things they often get taken for granted. They become part of the background of our lives and are things we will sacrifice easily when we feel crunched for time. What are these things? They are the little bit of time you afford yourself by getting up earlier or going to bed later than the rest of your household to have some time to yourself. Or, the fact that you make time to have healthy food ready and easily accessible to yourself every day, so you aren’t hurting your body or your bank account by eating out a lot. Or, being sure that your sleep is sufficient and that you are getting enough of it every day. There is nothing grand in these forms of self care. However, there is a great deal to lose when we start letting these types of things fall off our radar.

Watch this video as Dr. Natalie speaks on this matter. She aims to help us form new habits around self care and pay more attention to these “little things” in our lives.

Consider Getting a Personal Trainer…for Your Mind

I have been counseling others for almost  20 years now and have been receiving counseling off and on for around 30 years, so I forget sometimes that the idea of counseling is a really foreign one for many.  On top of that, mental health issues have all kinds of stigma attached to them.  The sad thing about this, it really pushes people away from counseling when even some brief intervention can be extremely helpful at different times in our lives.  So, in the theme of focusing on our goals for 2024, I thought I’d try to demystify counseling a bit and explain the real value to seeking this out in our lives.

I decided to start back to exercising this year at a local gym.  I am working on my strength training at this stage in my life.  In the past I have joined small personal training groups to help me stay accountable and focused on my training.  Having been around personal trainers (and being the people watching nerd that I am) I am often struck by the differences in styles these folks have and also the kind of clientele that they each attract.  One of the personal trainers at the gym I am at now is more laid back and comes around suggesting changes to the clients, but does not really push his clients much.  On the other hand, I’ve seen other trainers come up to their clients and say something like, “that is all wrong” and hand over hand push the client to lift more or change their posture in a way that makes the move more difficult.

I have actually noticed similar differences when working in group private practice as a psychologist and within the personal coaching world. It can be striking how many parallels these jobs have, personal training for you physical health and counseling/coaching for your emotional health.  Counselors and coaches are in many ways, personal trainers for your emotional health and mind, while personal trainers are more focused on your physical body and mind.  Now, not every personal trainer is alike and there are many that I would not respond well to.  For example, Jillian Michaels has shown America her spit fire approach and has been able to help many people with that approach.  However, if she and I met in a gym, I don’t think the sparks flying would be good and I would likely leave and not come back.  Well, this is not really helpful to my fitness goal however.  Now, if I thought that every personal trainer would be the same I would likely never go back and try again either, but because fitness and body image are large American cultural values, most of us know there will likely be a Bob Harper type trainer at the gym too. His softer approach may be more our style than Jillian’s.

“So what does this have to do with counseling, doc?”

What you may not know is that counselors and coaches are very different from one another too, and this matters…A LOT. We all have a lot of training and education in various counseling methods, but the work is done in the context of a relationship.  If you don’t trust me and respond to me, it really doesn’t matter how good I am or how much education I have had.  If I am Jillian Michaels, screaming in your face not to hold onto the treadmill when you’re running, you may have some choice words for me and not come back to my office.  Or vice versa, you might say, “Dang Doc!  You’ve got some spunk.  I like that.”, and be back for more the next week.

“Alright doc.  So, I get it.  We don’t get along with everyone and need a counselor or coach that is right for us.  Someone we can trust and listen to.  That still doesn’t mean that they will help us though. My problems are tough.  Really tough, doc!”

This is all true too.  Just getting along with your counselor or coach doesn’t make change happen.  You do.  I tell my clients this is because I don’t go home with you.  I am not going to go live in your house and do the work.  No more than your personal trainer is with you when you choose to order a pizza for dinner or have another beer and onion rings at the bar while watching the game.  The work isn’t done by us; it is done by you.  We are guides, we are teachers, and sometimes we are scientists exploring what the reason is for your problems, to help you have a context for what you might do differently.  While a personal trainer might tell me that my bad posture all my life has caused me my back issues and give me some strategies to build my strength and improve in this area, I might tell a client that their approach to conflict with their partners in the past seems to cause them added distress and not improve things and then give them some suggestions for changing their approach with this.   Neither a personal trainer or myself, as a counselor and coach, will do the actual work to facilitate change though.  That is on you.

Yet the accountability you have with your personal trainer, counselor, or coach can be really helpful in pushing you that extra bit to want to do these things.  However, you have to have a relationship with this person that facilitates wanting to do this and feeling held accountable.  The truly best results, both as a counselor/coach and as a client, have been with the kind of people that I would have chosen to be friends or associates with if I had met them in a different context.  Here is the brilliance in this however, it isn’t because I want to please them.  If that’s all it was about, I would likely find myself telling them what they wanted to hear.  No, it’s quite the opposite.  It is because they know me, or at least know my type.  They can call me on things, not just because I trust them to, but because they can see through it.  Similarly, as a counselor, I have found that some of the best help I have been able to offer is not only to call someone out on something, but also to simultaneously validate the person on how challenging this must be and empathize with how difficult it has been for them to stay in this pattern for so long.

The magic lays in the fact that all of this comes across in a genuine way to the client.  They know what I am saying is dead on, yet they also know that I feel for them that things have turned out this way and that it seems so difficult to change this.  And as this relationship builds, the easier it is to be honest.  This is the kind of relationship where you can be really known, yet not feel the pull of pleasing the counselor, because the counselor/coach has no other agenda with you.  You don’t have to worry about insulting or hurting your counselor/coach, like you have to worry about insulting or hurting a friend or family member.  Similarly, I don’t have to worry about telling my personal trainer I hate them when they make me use the 15 pound free weights for my chest press, when it is so much easier to use the 10 pound ones. It’s actually expected that this will occur. So really, feel free to share your opinion with your counselor/coach when your upset with being pushed, it’s all part of the work.

So here are a couple of challenges I have for you.

  1. The first, think about finding a counselor or coach this year.  Try out personal training for your emotional health and mind. These aspects of ourselves are very important.  We put so much value on how we look in America, but I am here to tell you that if you can’t get a grip on how you think and feel, pretty much everything else we work on is just that much harder. You might not have any major issues happening, and actually this is a great way to get things started.  It gives you some space to feel the counselor/coach out and be sure that this is someone that you can relate to and could feel comfortable talking to about your most vulnerable issues if needed.  When we are in crisis this is a much more difficult time to really feel this out well.  And don’t hesitate to try a few counselors or coaches before you find one that fits. If you don’t like a Jillian Michaels, find a Bob Harper. We have this false sense that all counselors and coaches are alike and can equally help us and this is just not true.  Keep looking until you find someone that fits.
  2. The second challenge is to try and hold yourself accountable to your goals.  And make sure they are your goals.  Counselors and coaches are great for throwing out a lot of suggestions and some may even sound like things you “should” do.  Don’t fall into the trap of trying to please your counselor or coach by telling yourself those are your goals too.  A goal that you don’t really want to follow through on, will not be a good goal for you.  If you’d like some help knowing how to set up your goals, see another blog I wrote called 5 Secrets to Making your New Year’s Resolutions Stick.   So, once you know the goals are really yours, push yourself to follow through.  There is no set timeline for accomplishment and part of the path to success is also failure (see another blog for more on this as well).

Do any of these sound like you?

    •
    • Feel a sense of lack, despite success in life or having done everything “right”
    • Struggle to articulate how you feel to others
    • Experience guilt about how you’re feeling
    • Have lost your way
    • Are struggling to overcome turmoil in your life
    • Have become resigned to accepting a life you don’t love

Many of us are suffering like this — daily life has become an ordeal, and we don’t know where or how to find help.

Use the Difficulty in Your Life

I get it. Life is hard some of the time and life is not hard some of the time. This is just what life is. I think we’ve been fed a load of crap that many of us believe we’re not doing life right, because there are hard days. Or believe we are screwing it up because we can’t sustain the good days. This just isn’t true. You are doing life well. This is what life is. And there are skills along this journey for making that work for us. If you need to shift your thinking, because you think you’re doing this wrong, you think somehow you’ve messed it all up because life is still hard some of the time, I want to help you to shift your mindset around this.

One of the primary things that I run into, is that people really think they’re doing something wrong if their life has any amount of discomfort in it. They followed all the rules and checked every box, yet life just doesn’t feel satisfying enough. And one of the worst parts of this to me is that there is this cultural programming and conditioning making you believe you are morally wrong for feeling this way. The problem isn’t that life doesn’t feel good all the time, its that we have forgotten that we are wired neurobiologically to need struggle in order to grow. That the not so good is part of the grand scheme of life. And we aren’t doing anything wrong, we are doing it right when we are able to lean in and use this struggle to our advantage.

How can we be in the mess of our life and not feel like we’re failing? A really great framework for this is to ask “How are you using the difficulty in your life?” Instead of getting stuck in the judging of what’s happening around you, I want you just to use it. Whatever that difficulty is in front of you. How can you take this difficulty and make it work for you? Instead of getting mired down and believing you are messing things up or feeling victim to this circumstance, change the narrative. Ask yourself how you make this difficult thing work for you.

Now here’s the beauty, when it’s joy or contentment, or one of those positive emotions, its easy to use that as a way to motivate you. You use the good stuff in your life without even thinking about it. Am I right? Do you feel me? We use our successes to keep us going in a forward motion, right?

How do we do that? That’s what’s key. If we use the positives in our life to inspire us, we are staying in the moment with what is. We are liking what we’re seeing, and so it’s easy to sit in the moment with what is. We are taking that “what is-ness” to do the next right thing in our life, and it goes seamlessly. And this is what happens when positive things are happening in our life.

But when life is difficult, then there seems to be an added burden. And that added burden is that we start to judge ourselves. That morally we are somehow messing it all up because we’re in this place that doesn’t feel great. What if we changed our thinking here? Acknowledge that life left us some lemons and know we can make lemonade. That’s using the difficulty. That’s staying in the moment of what is, and turning it into our own advantage.

What I want you to do when you feel discomfort in your life, the unease of those more difficult or not fun emotions showing up, is to use that difficulty to motivate your next move. It’s harder to use the difficulty when it’s negative, yet I want you to think about what happens to you if you’re always using what’s in front of you. If you’re always just sitting in it, letting all the feels wash over you, organizing them and then using them. You will stop getting bogged down in thinking you are morally doing something wrong here, or avoiding that thought, of getting irritable or fighting off that belief. None of those thoughts will help you. None of those responses will get you closer to closure, right? So what I want you to grasp is while life is messy, it’s okay for all the emotions to be there. All are equally welcome in your life, because they’re just telling you something about what you need next in your life. Use that. Use it to motivate you into your next right step for yourself.

Even if you can use the difficulty half a percent to better your circumstances, you’ve bettered yourself. When you use the difficulty for your own benefit, it not only didn’t take you down, it will take you up! If you are in the driver’s seat, if you’re an agent of change in your own life and don’t fall victim to difficult emotions that are present, you can use them to improve your life.

Have you made the problem go away? No. Is it all over yet? No. This is the mess of life. It takes some time and it takes some work from you. Yet, if there’s one takeaway that I want you to have from this, it’s that it’s okay to be in all of it. All of it’s welcome. Don’t push away from the difficulty. Don’t hide from the difficulty. Don’t beat yourself up and think that you’ve morally doing something wrong, because you have the difficulty. Be grateful that it’s there and use it for a purpose. A purpose of making your life feel better for you. That’s it.

You are your life’s purpose. So the only person that needs to benefit using that difficulty is you. Give yourself the gift of using it like you use the positive moments in your life, because you’ll start to see yourself as an agent of change when life feels stuck and when life feels wonderful. And that, my friends, is an amazing gift. To always feel your agency and know that you have choice in every single moment of every single day, changes the game. It shifts the mindset considerably, and it changes how you approach things entirely.

I hope that this helps you. I hope it helps you to learn to love your story. And I hope you see how the mindset of using the difficult times in your life can help you live a centered life thriving.

Mastering Personal Growth with Hellos and Goodbyes

So full disclosure, it is just about 3am as I start to write this.  And its not the “I’ve been burning the midnight oil” 3am.  Its more like a “Good Morning” 2 hours too early kind of thing.  Midlife is a delight sometimes.  If I drink after 7pm I have to get up to go to the bathroom more times than I would like to admit and then sometimes my mind takes off and there is no going back to sleep.  I usually choose to write during these times.  The things that my mind is racing about are usually things that I want to write about anyway.  Lucky you!

This time my mind woke me up and got going round and round about the idea of time.  How much time we are allotted.  How that time allotment is the same if you are living your best life or living on skid row.  How some moments slip away like sand through your hands and other moments last way too long.  There is just a real mind bending nature to time.  Einstein’s theory of relativity in the space time continuum at work, I guess. And as I woke up to write this blog last spring, I was feeling pretty beat up by time.

It was a specific time for me, as I watched my first born finish high school.  Lots of grief goes with that.  And even though you think you are ready for it and you have mentally prepared as much as you can, grief can knock you down without a moment’s notice, whether you like it or not.  And boy did it.  It started around my birthday at the end of February and kept going until at least mid May.  It didn’t help that as a Midwest resident my Vitamin D stores were depleted by February and I didn’t have the opportunity to fill them back up with good old sunlight yet. (For those of you who don’t live in a place that only has 7 or 8 hours of sunlight most of the winter, what this means is you are moody as hell and depressed, the result of good old Mother Nature.) All and all though, I was much more compassionately self-aware during this experience than I had been about grief ever before.  A skill I had really been working on (and will continue to work on and teach about at LearnToLoveYourStory.com).

At first I found myself wanting to run from the grief. I wanted to push that shit away as far as I possibly could.  Yet, just as I teach in all realms of my career, the discomfort is the place to stay when you don’t understand something.  As hateful as that may seem, showing up to your discomfort with curiosity and compassion and letting the message reveal itself is the best medicine for these kinds of things (that’s compassionate self-awareness in action).  So I sat in that shit for a hot minute.  And as I sat I started to think. I thought about time. About lost time with my son.  About new time his life was about to embark on.  And about what time looks like for me now that he is aging.  That last little bit is what stopped me dead in my tracks.

Here is what I imagined I saw.  The same fucking day over and over again for the next 10 years.  Terrifying!  I have another child who is 10 years younger than my first and what I was staring down the barrel of was a rinse repeat life until she would become a senior in high school.  Don’t get me wrong, I am blessed and am one of those really despicable people that loves her time with her kids, so that is not what bothered me about it.  What bothered me about it was that having fun with my kids is not the only aspect of my life as I raise them.  Especially as a single parent.  There is a lot of work attached to that, both in my work outside and inside the home.  And what I was looking at was feeling stuck in doing things the same way that I had always done them, because…just because.  What else do you do?  Ah, and there is where the true nugget of my grief was laying.  Are you tracking with me?  If not, no worries, this was a bit of a puzzle for even me to unravel.

Ok then.  So I spent some nights (and days) giving myself time to cry and yell and thrash, and all the things that come with grief and grieving.  I tried to bargain with myself that this was not what this was (again, one of the stages of grief) and eventually resolved myself to facing that there is a part of my life that was coming to an end, and it wasn’t the part that I had prepared for. What part is that?  The part of me that was hustling to be sure that everything was cared for in my children’s lives, in ex-spouses’ lives, in my extended family’s lives, in my friends’ lives, and in my clients’ lives.  It was the part of me that saw herself as a kind of Sherpa, here to carry the load for everyone else.  It was a survival mechanism born out of my chaotic childhood, in which I learned that my worth was derived from the value of my accumulated deeds for others.  It was time for her and I to part.  I do not have to survive my life anymore…or maybe its that she is not responsible for looking down the barrel of a rinse repeat life for another decade.  Most likely its both.

The truth is she has been on autopilot in the background of my life, despite my best efforts to heal from that pattern and lots of therapy to redefine this aspect of myself. I had set firm boundaries and really didn’t think she was around anymore.  And yet, there she was in the background doing her thing, making sure that all is taken care of, because without that to do she starts to panic. And her panic is not my favorite experience.  In fact it is excruciating for me to deal with.  When there isn’t other lives to care for, this part of me doesn’t know what to do with herself.  Her continued existence was tied to my son.  A contract of sorts that I entered into unwittingly at his birth.  Again, a remnant of an existence I created coming out of a chaotic childhood.

Now, in all fairness I had done a TON of work on this aspect of myself.  The reality was that I had cut her out of doing this in every other area of my life but with my son.  I understand now, that was because of the nature of how much changed for he and I during his high school years.  Somehow, she had convinced me in the subtle way that she does that I needed to continue to employ her version of caring for him as my final tie to him during his childhood.  Needless to say, none of this is actually true.  Its just a story I’d been telling myself about the world since as young as I could remember.  And because it already hurts to be raising a child who is aging and individuating away from you, I had left this aspect of myself to its own devices.

That is until I realized there would be no more games to schlep him to or hurry across the city to get to on time to prove my worth.  There would be no more proms to take pictures at.  There would be no more study help or reading papers.  And there was little else that this aspect of me was doing for him any longer.  The years had already stripped away tucking him into bed and reading him a book each night.  Or letting him play hooky from school and taking him to a movie instead.  Or throwing him the most spectacular of super hero birthdays.  So when the last swim meet was done.  When the last prom was over.  When the last of all the things we do with our teenagers passed, I had nothing more to do but face this part of me and grieve.

I grieved with her, because lets be honest this is a sad transition for parents.  I grieved for her that she was not sure how she would show her worth in this world.  I grieved her as I told her that there was no longer any space in my life for this old pattern of Human Doing instead of Human Being.  She wasn’t happy about that last part and I needed to wrestle some with her on that.  But the truth was that I had started three years ago to build a life for myself that I wanted to live in.  One pebble at a time I have laid that path out.  And there was not room for this part of me in this new life.  I no longer need to hustle for my worth in parenting.  And believe me, I have met my match with my daughter, so there is no way I would really feel good about myself in that fight.  She is a harder one to please than my son.  And while I no longer needed this part of me to be here proving my worth to my son, I did need to thank this part of me for all she has done.  She was always doing the best she knew how with what she knew to do.  I needed to honor that for her.  And I did in my own way.

I tell you this story to help highlight one of the more difficult aspects of personal growth.  As we grow things change…that’s a given.  What is not so well known is that as we take on new things, new ways of being, new aspects of ourselves during this growth period, we also have to make room for letting go.  This is not like that scene in The Jerk, when Steve Martin is aimlessly walking about his apartment before having to leave saying that he is going to take this lamp and that pillow.  Sometimes with change we just need to say goodbye.  Or at least send off parts of ourselves on a perpetual retirement (I kind of prefer the latter myself).  And that is what I did the Spring my son graduated.  And once this was done, a whole lot of space opened up in my heart and I was ready to take on some new challenges and adventures for myself.  That’s how it works.  We say goodbye and hello at the same time.  That is life.  There is such a sweetness to its delicacy and how relative it all is to whatever course you have been on.  And I wouldn’t want it any other way.

This is How To LIVE YOUR DREAM!

I know we are all very different in our experiences in life, yet there are some very universal aspects to our lived experiences that I think we overlook.  We think that we are “all alone” in our experience, when in fact we are not alone.  We most likely have ALL been there in one capacity or another. So today’s blog is really about helping us to explore this concept and maybe save ourselves from the collective illusion that we are alone in our suffering.

When I was in my thirties, I found myself in a management position on a large scale for the first time.  I had supervised and managed prior to this, but during this particular stint in my career I found myself in boardrooms with individuals (mostly male and mostly white), whom had been doing these jobs for decades.  I was definitely the lowest on the totem pole as far as seniority and gender role, and most definitely was seen as green.  This lead me into a continual battle of trying to prove my worth in this environment.  I was working harder and longer hours than anyone else in this level of management and getting less recognition than all of them.  It came to a head for me towards the end of my work with this agency, when I joined a coalition within the agency that was looking at making some modifications across disciplines and the CEO of one of those disciplinary areas took credit for not just part, but all of what I had done.  ALL OF IT.  I am certain that my name never even came up in the rooms where this man pitched these ideas.  He later was promoted and then found employment outside the agency entirely, and you better bet that this interdisciplinary project was part of the wave he was riding as he did so.

This was a major learning moment for me.  I had the fortune of also working under a manager that was a woman, who had experienced many similar instances in her longer career within this organization.  We commiserated some about this, yet venting about it wasn’t enough to satisfy me.  I was really upset by the feeling that there was a setup that I wasn’t going to be able to break working within this kind of a hierarchy.  It was one of the factors that lead to my looking for other employment and moving on in my career.  What I discovered is that once you are in the unenviable position of hustling for your worth and proving yourself, that energy takes over completely.  And if you don’t stop this pattern yourself there is no one else that will come to save you.  You have to be your own hero.  Others will always benefit from your assuming the myth that your worthiness must be proven.  Others can (and many unfortunately will) capitalize on your courageous efforts to prove yourself by taking credit for your work, your credibility, and your value.  Not everyone is trying to do this as an intentional and manipulative ploy.  It is just that the system of “haves” and “have nots” will always result in more “haves” and “have nots”.  If you assume the role of a “have not”, trying to always prove yourself to the “haves”, then you are perpetually within that energy.

This is not to say you can’t liberate yourself from this.  You can, but you must remember that you will not liberate yourself within the context of this system.  You will have to leave the system behind completely.  Sometimes this happens in the literal sense, as it did for me when I left this position; and sometimes it is in a more figurative sense, when we leave behind the unspoken rules of “haves” and “have nots”, and dance to a different drummer right within the context we are stuck in.  I’ve tried it both ways…and in both contexts I have learned another valuable lesson.  When we get started with a venture like this, we feel like we are on our own.  We are fighting the fight, yet we are depleting our own stored energy because we have no back up.

I want to explore this part of the journey a little further.  I see this “loneliness” factor as a rumble strip (for more explanation on what I mean by this, feel free to read another blog where I explain this metaphor in more detail). Loneliness tells us that we are slipping back into the “have” and “have not” paradigm again.  We feel alone, because we are still indoctrinated in the illusion that we are fighting to prove our worth.  When you notice that you have a case of the “I’m all alone in this”, stop.  Here is where you need to change your tactics.  The truth REALLY IS that we are NEVER ALONE.  NEVER!  In fact there is always people suffering in these same ways we are. We are not unique in these experiences.

In fact, the illusion that we are alone is a function of the “have/have not” system of oppression. Except, instead of others oppressing us, we are doing the work for those oppressing us. This feature of how systems sustain inequalities is called internalized oppression. The things we were taught and learned we are now enforcing on ourselves.  In this case, believing we are alone in this suffering keeps us locked in the energy of trying to prove ourselves over and over again.  There is nothing to prove.  We already have worth.  Yet, if we keep trying to prove that worth, we bias others’ opinions of us. We are implying that we may not have that worth in the first place. Otherwise, why would we need to prove ourselves.  As we continue to pursue proving ourselves we are keeping ourselves oppressed on autopilot, without anyone else having to do anything.

The remedy to this is to get connected to others.  To build ourselves a community of people that let us know this is not the case.  In the story I’ve shared here, my community started with someone else who had the same experience and was willing to help me see I was not alone.  This connection started to build a community of other supporters in my career that were there when I felt stuck in the spiral of “have” and “have not”, and would challenge me to break the the cycle by not participating in my own suffering.  I would stop trying to prove myself and would honor my worth.  If those who I worked with didn’t honor that worth too, I would leave.  They did not deserve my service if they could not honor the worth it brought to their organization.  Ultimately that has lead to my working for myself.  I said NO liberally. Said NO without abandon in these organizations when they were not honoring what I brought to the table. And eventually I said NO as many times as I needed and disappointed as many people as I needed, so as NEVER to disappoint myself again.

That is, until I realized I had become both my “have” and my “have not”.  I had started to hustle for my worth in my work again, even though I was working for myself.  I started trying to to prove myself TO MYSELF?!? That I could have my own practice and start a new business venture simultaneously.  And when the math didn’t work, because there were not enough hours in the day, I doubled down and kept killing myself trying to make both work.  I was going to prove it to myself that this could be done.  But then I realized that insidious “have” and “have not” system had seeped into me again.  I was feeling alone in my battle.  I was noticing that I wasn’t feeling appreciated.  I recognized that even without another person to prove myself to, I could get caught in the grips of proving myself and hustling for my worth.  As I noted in my first blog in the “Mumblings of a Midlife Mess” series, I was going back to an old and familiar pattern and oppressing myself without even noticing.

The antidote…quitting the hustle!  And you, my story lovers, are a part of that for me.  I need to surround myself in the truth that I already have the worth and no hustling is necessary.  I don’t need to prove that the side hustle can out-do the day job.  It already has that worth.  I just have to have faith in that truth and act accordingly.  So, I share this with you to help you see that even we can be our own oppressors.  Even with the best of intentions, we can fall into old patterns.  And one of the ways that we can stop this in its tracks, is to share it with others.  To out it.  To say aloud, this system is not serving me and is not true.

I am no longer fighting for my worth.  I am living the worth I already am.  We have all done this to ourselves and we will all continue to fall into these old patterns. Yet, if we come together and gain the support of one another when we recognize this, we can and will transcend this old map that is taking us to previous destinations. When we stop hustling, we start using a compass and heading towards our own “due North” into uncharted territories. We design the path, instead of following it. We name our value, instead of asking for it to be recognized. And ultimately, we design the lives WE WANT for ourselves and attain OUR DREAMS.

Have you Already Fallen off the Exercise Wagon?

Have you fallen off the proverbial wagon with your exercise routine. If so, you are in good company.

Springtime is notorious for becoming a time of reckoning when it becomes clear that all our great New Year’s intentions aren’t coming to fruition.
