Consider Getting a Personal Trainer…for Your Mind

I have been counseling others for almost  20 years now and have been receiving counseling off and on for around 30 years, so I forget sometimes that the idea of counseling is a really foreign one for many.  On top of that, mental health issues have all kinds of stigma attached to them.  The sad thing about this, it really pushes people away from counseling when even some brief intervention can be extremely helpful at different times in our lives.  So, in the theme of focusing on our goals for 2024, I thought I’d try to demystify counseling a bit and explain the real value to seeking this out in our lives.

I decided to start back to exercising this year at a local gym.  I am working on my strength training at this stage in my life.  In the past I have joined small personal training groups to help me stay accountable and focused on my training.  Having been around personal trainers (and being the people watching nerd that I am) I am often struck by the differences in styles these folks have and also the kind of clientele that they each attract.  One of the personal trainers at the gym I am at now is more laid back and comes around suggesting changes to the clients, but does not really push his clients much.  On the other hand, I’ve seen other trainers come up to their clients and say something like, “that is all wrong” and hand over hand push the client to lift more or change their posture in a way that makes the move more difficult.

I have actually noticed similar differences when working in group private practice as a psychologist and within the personal coaching world. It can be striking how many parallels these jobs have, personal training for you physical health and counseling/coaching for your emotional health.  Counselors and coaches are in many ways, personal trainers for your emotional health and mind, while personal trainers are more focused on your physical body and mind.  Now, not every personal trainer is alike and there are many that I would not respond well to.  For example, Jillian Michaels has shown America her spit fire approach and has been able to help many people with that approach.  However, if she and I met in a gym, I don’t think the sparks flying would be good and I would likely leave and not come back.  Well, this is not really helpful to my fitness goal however.  Now, if I thought that every personal trainer would be the same I would likely never go back and try again either, but because fitness and body image are large American cultural values, most of us know there will likely be a Bob Harper type trainer at the gym too. His softer approach may be more our style than Jillian’s.

“So what does this have to do with counseling, doc?”

What you may not know is that counselors and coaches are very different from one another too, and this matters…A LOT. We all have a lot of training and education in various counseling methods, but the work is done in the context of a relationship.  If you don’t trust me and respond to me, it really doesn’t matter how good I am or how much education I have had.  If I am Jillian Michaels, screaming in your face not to hold onto the treadmill when you’re running, you may have some choice words for me and not come back to my office.  Or vice versa, you might say, “Dang Doc!  You’ve got some spunk.  I like that.”, and be back for more the next week.

“Alright doc.  So, I get it.  We don’t get along with everyone and need a counselor or coach that is right for us.  Someone we can trust and listen to.  That still doesn’t mean that they will help us though. My problems are tough.  Really tough, doc!”

This is all true too.  Just getting along with your counselor or coach doesn’t make change happen.  You do.  I tell my clients this is because I don’t go home with you.  I am not going to go live in your house and do the work.  No more than your personal trainer is with you when you choose to order a pizza for dinner or have another beer and onion rings at the bar while watching the game.  The work isn’t done by us; it is done by you.  We are guides, we are teachers, and sometimes we are scientists exploring what the reason is for your problems, to help you have a context for what you might do differently.  While a personal trainer might tell me that my bad posture all my life has caused me my back issues and give me some strategies to build my strength and improve in this area, I might tell a client that their approach to conflict with their partners in the past seems to cause them added distress and not improve things and then give them some suggestions for changing their approach with this.   Neither a personal trainer or myself, as a counselor and coach, will do the actual work to facilitate change though.  That is on you.

Yet the accountability you have with your personal trainer, counselor, or coach can be really helpful in pushing you that extra bit to want to do these things.  However, you have to have a relationship with this person that facilitates wanting to do this and feeling held accountable.  The truly best results, both as a counselor/coach and as a client, have been with the kind of people that I would have chosen to be friends or associates with if I had met them in a different context.  Here is the brilliance in this however, it isn’t because I want to please them.  If that’s all it was about, I would likely find myself telling them what they wanted to hear.  No, it’s quite the opposite.  It is because they know me, or at least know my type.  They can call me on things, not just because I trust them to, but because they can see through it.  Similarly, as a counselor, I have found that some of the best help I have been able to offer is not only to call someone out on something, but also to simultaneously validate the person on how challenging this must be and empathize with how difficult it has been for them to stay in this pattern for so long.

The magic lays in the fact that all of this comes across in a genuine way to the client.  They know what I am saying is dead on, yet they also know that I feel for them that things have turned out this way and that it seems so difficult to change this.  And as this relationship builds, the easier it is to be honest.  This is the kind of relationship where you can be really known, yet not feel the pull of pleasing the counselor, because the counselor/coach has no other agenda with you.  You don’t have to worry about insulting or hurting your counselor/coach, like you have to worry about insulting or hurting a friend or family member.  Similarly, I don’t have to worry about telling my personal trainer I hate them when they make me use the 15 pound free weights for my chest press, when it is so much easier to use the 10 pound ones. It’s actually expected that this will occur. So really, feel free to share your opinion with your counselor/coach when your upset with being pushed, it’s all part of the work.

So here are a couple of challenges I have for you.

  1. The first, think about finding a counselor or coach this year.  Try out personal training for your emotional health and mind. These aspects of ourselves are very important.  We put so much value on how we look in America, but I am here to tell you that if you can’t get a grip on how you think and feel, pretty much everything else we work on is just that much harder. You might not have any major issues happening, and actually this is a great way to get things started.  It gives you some space to feel the counselor/coach out and be sure that this is someone that you can relate to and could feel comfortable talking to about your most vulnerable issues if needed.  When we are in crisis this is a much more difficult time to really feel this out well.  And don’t hesitate to try a few counselors or coaches before you find one that fits. If you don’t like a Jillian Michaels, find a Bob Harper. We have this false sense that all counselors and coaches are alike and can equally help us and this is just not true.  Keep looking until you find someone that fits.
  2. The second challenge is to try and hold yourself accountable to your goals.  And make sure they are your goals.  Counselors and coaches are great for throwing out a lot of suggestions and some may even sound like things you “should” do.  Don’t fall into the trap of trying to please your counselor or coach by telling yourself those are your goals too.  A goal that you don’t really want to follow through on, will not be a good goal for you.  If you’d like some help knowing how to set up your goals, see another blog I wrote called 5 Secrets to Making your New Year’s Resolutions Stick.   So, once you know the goals are really yours, push yourself to follow through.  There is no set timeline for accomplishment and part of the path to success is also failure (see another blog for more on this as well).

Do any of these sound like you?

    • Experience guilt about how you’re feeling

Our Bodies Are Self-Care GOLD

Our bodies can be the part of us that we are most difficult towards and which we most struggle to care for appropriately. This is sometimes a direct correlate to what our life experiences have been. For example, many times the wounds of our youth are buried in our bodies. Maybe you were bullied as a child for what you looked like. Or, maybe you were hard on yourself about your body, because you felt you didn’t muster up to the social programming of what a good body looks like.

Many times the wounds of our youth are buried in our bodies.

The result of this can be that we begin to think our bodies are betraying us. Instead of caring for our bodies, we then become another punisher towards our bodies. What is very unfortunate about this common occurrence, is that we then become divorced from one of our greatest assets in self-care. Our bodies. Dissociation from our bodies is a common experience. This seems odd, I know, since we still “know” we have a body. What I am referring to is the experience of “going away“ in our minds, when things in life are unpleasant or aversive.

Take the example of being bullied as a child. Many times when a child faces bullying day after day at school, they become adept at “going away“ in their minds. Occupying their brains with other activities or thoughts in order to remove themselves from the experience of bullying, even though they cannot remove themselves from being in the classroom. Ultimately what occurs when we dissociate like this, is that our body is left to participate in the experience in real time, while our minds are what get the reprieve. Over the course of our lifetimes we become very adept at “going away“ from our bodies, and more and more dissociated from our body’s experience.

The result of learning to hate our bodies is that we begin to think our bodies are betraying us, when actually it is our social programming and conditioning that is betraying our bodies.

I want you to think about how much time you spent away from your body as a child, as an adolescent, as a young adult, and presently. For many of us, this is a significant amount of time. The more time you spent away from your body in dissociative activities of the mind, the more effortful it will be to do the sacred work of re-associating yourself to your body. I still strongly encourage you to start to re-associate yourself with this comprehensive self-care asset…your body!

Why? Because our bodies contain within in them all the feel good chemicals that get sought out externally. Endorphins are a feel good chemical we can create during physical exertion. Serotonin is produced predominantly in our gut and through good nutrition we can promote better use of this chemical…a chemical which the pharmaceutical industry has capitalized on through the creation of anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications. Getting together with people we love and care about releases Oxytocin, the same intoxicating substance that we feel when we fall in love or bring a new child into the world. Just think of yourself as a chemistry set waiting to be opened on your birthday, and your body as the items in the box that will help you create new feel good potions for yourself.

Just think of yourself as a chemistry set waiting to be opened on your birthday, and your body as the items in the box that will help you create new feel good potions for yourself.

Be gentle, kind, and careful as you start this work. Being in the present moment can be interpreted as a threat to those of us who have been escaping from our bodies most of our lives. If you experienced even minor trauma, such as bullying in childhood, and learned to escape your body in order to cope…your nervous system will likely interpret any experience of being inside your body as a threat. It may be one of the reasons that mindfulness and meditation exercises have been difficult for you when you have tried to pick them up as a self care habit in the past.

So be kind and patient with yourself as you start to interface differently with your body. Take a look at this vlog to learn more about how to get started.

How to Cope When Your World Changes in Midlife

One of the main reasons women in midlife come to my programs is to find a sense of self again. I know that sounds strange, yet the truth is these women have no idea who they really are or what they really want in life. They know what they do, they know who they care for, and they may even know what they are good at. What they don’t know is who they really are. The real version of them. The one that has been locked away inside. Why is this? Because early in our childhood the social conditioning begins. “Be a nice girl” we are told. “Shouldn’t you share that with your friend?” we are asked. We are even likely to hear, “you’re a natural at being a little mom for everyone” or “You are so good at knowing what others need.”

And then we are off to the races. Once we are conditioned to find our worth in how we codependently take care of others, we are hooked. Like a drug, we seek more and more and more. We want to be that friend, that sibling, that spouse, that parent, who against all understanding can hold it all together. Can take care of all the things and still look good doing it. Because don’t forget our looks are our other form of social currency as women. It has to look easy and we must look beautiful doing it, in order to fully gain our worth. And we hustle for our worth in this madness for a long while. Many of us keep hustling, until we can’t anymore. And when the last of our roles has ended and our beauty’s shiny luster wears off with age, where does that leave us? It leaves us to our own devices. It leaves us with ourselves. Only the woman who we now inhabit has been a human doer for so long, she is a stranger to us. Who is she at all? What are her wants and desires? We sometimes have no idea where to even start.

That is usually where I come in. A woman will come into my office for therapy or join one of my programs for coaching and we will start to unravel the layers of social conditioning that has told her who she is. We are seeking to help her find who she actually is. Underneath all the tasks she had and roles she played is an actual person. However, it is a person that often times has been so horribly neglected for years there is no recognizable aspect to this person. This self (inside the socially conditioned woman/human doer) is a stranger to the women who work with me. This is where the work begins.

Learning to Love Our Stories is a journey of self love, self exploration, and self empowerment. Yet not one of those things is attainable without true self awareness. If we do not know the person we truly are we cannot love them, we cannot help them explore, and we certainly cannot help them make empowered choices to create the life they want to live. And that is where all stories begin really…they start with meeting the main character. So what happens when you are the main character and you don’t know yourself? Answer…you start to know yourself by listening. You are listening for what it is you truly want. That is usually a wonderful indication of who you really are.

So here is the catch. If a woman has been conditioned most of her life to look out in her world and identify what is wanted of her by others and meet those needs, she has atrophied the cognitive muscles to look inside and see what she wants and needs for herself. And when these women are finally sitting with me trying to learn these new skills it is an effortful process. It is like an adult trying to pick up a new language. Let me explain. Speaking fluently in a new language is never going to happen overnight. There will need to be repetition. Tons and tons of repetition. And even then we initially learn a new language by translating it through our native tongue. So you hear a phrase in the foreign language and you think through the lens of your current language to know what that means. Then you decide in your current language what you want to say back and you translate that back into the foreign language. It takes a LONG time to really get the hang of this. A LONG TIME and A LOT OF PRACTICE.

So how does this match up with what women are trying to do when they are learning to know the real version of themselves? Let me give you an example. Once I helped a mother at the start of her empty nesting, who was really struggling to know what she wanted in her life. She had spent the better part of nearly three decades taking care of her kids and her spouse, making sure that their every need was met. So now as she was looking at retirement from those roles she was really shook up. She didn’t have a purpose. She didn’t see a meaning to her existence any longer. Her depression was entrenched in this understanding that she had worth as a mother and a wife, yet the circumstances of her life were no longer providing her opportunity to express this worth. This was her native tongue. To be a human giver in a family setting.

Here is where the new language starts. We talked at length about self care…a totally foreign concept and one that was saturated with this idea that she was selfish if she did anything for herself. She wanted to start being better about self care, but she wasn’t quite sure how to do that when it always felt so uncomfortable. I would suggest starting with easy things that she already wants. She then asked me, “Do I get to want things?” She was seeing the idea of self care (the new language) through the translation of her old life, which told her doing something for yourself is selfish and childish. What happens is the ideas are lost in the translation. “Doing for yourself” or “self care” has different cultural meanings when translated literally. In the language of a therapist it is a form of general hygiene, like brushing your teeth every day, eating nutritious meals, and getting enough sleep. In my client’s language, “doing for yourself” meant she was choosing herself above others and in so doing disrespecting those she loved.

Photo by EKATERINA BOLOVTSOVA on Pexels.com

Any good teacher knows that when there is a meaning breakdown, it is helpful to bring in a metaphor that makes sense to someone given their cultural conditioning. So one of the ways I helped this woman to see what self care meant, was by translating it through the idea of caring for others. She needed to see herself as one of the “others” she was caring for in her life. For years, her spouse and children had wanted for nothing as she had dutifully served them. Now she needed to turn her attention to the one that was neglected all that time…herself. This was still uncomfortable for her, so we took the metaphor a bit further. I asked her what she would think if her youngest child came home and told her that they had felt ignored their whole lives in the family home. That all the other siblings had more needs than this child did, so this child learned to be quiet and not make a fuss. And if this child told my client that they had watched as she poured herself into the other siblings and now this child was feeling neglected and somehow jilted as a result of this inequity, I asked my client, “What would you do for this child?” My client had a TON of answers for that and a reinvigorated purpose as she spoke about what she could do for this child in a scenario like this. When she was done telling me what she would do for that child, I told her to think of herself as this neglected child and to apply those same ideas to herself. That is the true meaning of the translating the meaning of self care into her native language.

Women often have no idea that they don’t know themselves and almost never have a language for this experience. What they know is they are sad, irritable, aimless in their purpose and function in life, complacent, and not sure where to start to try and fix any of this. I tell them that they are right where they need to start. In their discomfort. As I teach them a new language for how to know themselves and articulate their needs and wants, I ask that they sit in their discomfort and listen. Listen to what the discomfort tells you. If you are worried whether you did enough for your children, maybe what you are hearing is that not enough was done for you. You can’t literally translate what you hear into your native tongue. Your body mind doesn’t speak that way. If you hear yourself filled with resentment that your partner has an entire life with their work, hobbies and friends, maybe what your body mind is telling you is that you want a life too and its urging you to go out and find that. If you notice yourself feeling lonely, maybe what you’re hearing is that you need to expand your tribe and find new connections. Piece by piece, thought by thought, worry by worry, I help these women translate what their body minds are telling them and help them to create new self empowered choices to design a life the meets these new insights.

What can be really neat about my work is that it is a lot like a treasure hunt. There are treasures hidden under the sea of emotions that we are having as we transition in midlife. Our job is to learn the movements of the sea and the storms, in order to understand where those treasures may have drifted off to on the seafloor. It is always an adventure. And it is not for the faint of heart. We must prepare ourselves for storms as we set sail to find ourselves. Treasure is there to be sure, but so are dangers. A trusty navigator and a crew are always helpful additions to this journey. If you think you are in this boat on your own, take a listen to what a recent group cohort said about their journeys in the Learn to Love Your Story program. You may find that having someone like myself on your side, who has the navigational tools to manage the sea and storms, as well as a group of women that are in this with you to discover their own treasures, is just the right fit for what you need to weather your midlife storm.

5 Steps to Get Your Time Back

img
Are you one of those folks who feels so busy all the time, yet can’t seem to get accomplished the things that you want to? Well, join the club…and that club is big. I have a handful of pointers here you may find helpful. Full disclosure, I suck at this. It’s an area I strive to be better at all the time. I think it’s actually a chronic problem in America, so my guess is this blog may strike your interest.

  1. Being “Busy” is Not a Commodity!

img
Photo by Antoni Shkraba on Pexels.com

I can’t take credit for this concept and would love to give credit to the person that I heard it from, but I don’t remember his name. It was another therapist I met while working in Community Mental Health. Here is what it means. A commodity is something that is a raw material that can be bought and sold. Items you get at the grocery store would be considered food commodities.

“So why are you calling being ‘busy’ a commodity Doc? It’s something we do, not something we buy or sell?”

Well my friends here is what has happened in our society. Being “busy” has a new cultural value, sometimes positive and sometimes negative. We talk about it like it is a thing we own, such as “You think you have a busy schedule? I have more to do than time to do it in?” Then we start talking to each other like we have more or less of it, like it’s a competition.

For instance:

“I have three kids. Busy is just a way of life. The more kids and the more activities the more busyness we have.”

Remember how I have talked about words being powerful, well this is a prime example of how the way we talk about things shapes how we think about them. Stop it. Being “busy” is not a thing we have (or want to have). It is not something we should compete with one another about having more or less of. “Busy”ness is really a reflection of where we are putting our priorities, which leads me to the next tip.

  1. Get Back on Track with What Your Priorities are.

img
Photo by Polina Zimmerman on Pexels.com
So, what are your priorities? If you are like a basic American, your priorities may be ranked in this order:

  1. Work
  2. My family
  3. Me

I would strongly encourage you to take a good look at this and think about it for a while. Be more curious about how these priorities got to be in the order they are in. Be a Colombo in your own life (and for those of you too young to know who that is…look it up, there are great clips online). Columbo was the master at staying curious and asking questions about things in a way that you could finally get to the kernel of truth underneath the surface. So, for example, when I think my life is getting out of whack like this, I start asking myself things like:

Me the therapist: “So Natalie why is work first right now?”

Me the workaholic: “Well, it’s because I want to be the best provider for my family.”

Me the therapist: “So what you are telling me is that you value your family more than work, and are using work as one way to do right by them.”

Me the workaholic: “Ok. I see what you’re saying. So maybe my priorities are more like: 1) Family/Loved ones, 2) Work, and 3) Me”

Me the therapist: “Alright. Help me understand why family and loved ones are so important.”

Me the workaholic: “Well I am responsible for them and need to be sure I am doing everything I can for them.”

Me the therapist: “I see. So, you really value making sure you’re at your best so you can best be able to help those you love and feel responsibility for.”

Me as a workaholic: “Huh. I hadn’t thought of it that way, but I guess that is true.”

Me the therapist: “So, if I am hearing you correctly what you are really saying is you put yourself first in order to be the best you can for your family and one of the ways you are doing that is by providing for your family? Am I hearing that right?”

Me the “former” workaholic: “I kind of lost sight of that order. I guess I better think about how to pull that back in line again.”

So, after you’re finished scoffing at the fact that I talk to myself, think about how I did this. It’s pretty easy. It’s just exploring with curiosity (NOT self-judgment) how things got out of order for myself. I encourage you to try this and see if part of feeling “busy” all the time is you are putting the wrong things first, second, and third, which means you aren’t getting to the things that are really important to you.

  1. Take an Audit of Your Time

img
Photo by Content Pixie on Pexels.com

A great way to start this is to get data. If you’re an analytical person this will seem like a great idea. If you are more of a person that goes by the “feel” of things, this will seem like a form of torture. Do it anyway. Just log each hour of the waking day for a week and count up your sleep time too. What you will be left with is a good snapshot of the discretionary time you have, and I am warning you, it isn’t as much as you think. The average American consumes about 50 hours of media for pleasure on average. “What the what?!?!?” How is it humanly possible to have this time? I’ll give you a hint, you are robbing from somewhere else. Could be less sleep you are getting, no time with your spouse, no fun time with your kids just discipline and necessary caretaking, etc. So, try taking this audit. Remember, there are only 168 hours in a week. If you are sleeping your 8 hours a day, that leaves 112. If you are working a 40 hour a week job, that leaves 72 hours (3 days of time). If you are an average American consuming 50 hours of media outside of this time that is ONLY 22 hours left (less than one full day’s time). So, what are you doing with that 22 hours? And are you being too hard on yourself for not getting to 60 hours’ worth of things in this 22 hours. Remember, I didn’t even count in travel time to/from work, daily/weekly household tasks, daily grooming, etc. I told you it wasn’t a lot of time. Give yourself a break and go back to #2 and realign yourself with what is really important to you in life.

  1. Take Care of You! Schedule it in to Your EVERY DAY!  I Mean It!

img

All joking aside, self-care is pivotal to all this working. You may not arrive at the same values I did in the example in #2, but I want you to really think about better prioritizing yourself. You are a finite resource, just like your measly 22 hours of discretionary time each week (approximately). If you are not taking care of this resource it gets depleted. If it gets depleted there is less of it to use. Math is not my best subject, but even I know if you are only subtracting eventually you go bust. So, remember to put into yourself. It doesn’t have to be a lot of time, but I would encourage at least 30 minutes of your day dedicated to doing something that just lifts your soul. Now this might be media related, like watching your favorite Netflix show, yet I’d encourage you to think outside the box on this one. Get creative. Sometimes its 15 extra minutes to take a bath instead of a shower in the morning, or 10 extra minutes to smell the hair of your little one after they have finished their bath as you read them a book before bed, or a phone call to your bestie to laugh your behind off at the latest antics your everyday life brings you. Whatever it is…do as Nike has trained us to…Just Do It.

  1. Last, But Never Least…

img
Photo by Ylanite Koppens on Pexels.com

You’ve now done a great job of taking assessment of what your priorities are and where your time is going. You’ve started to change your language about being “busy” and shift your mindset to how to best use your precious time. You are remembering to honor that your biggest resource can be your biggest vulnerability if you are not attending to it, and you are taking time each day to lift yourself back up and replenish this finite resource. Now that you’ve got all this going for you, re-arrange your time. It’s that simple…”Uh Doc. I’m sorry but nothing about this is simple.” Ok, I agree. You have to be intentional on this, but new habits can form in about three weeks. Take that discretionary time and rearrange it to better fit getting your needs met in the order you value having them met. Sure, that means some sacrificing, yet it is well worth it. When we are working in alignment with what our purpose and values are in life, we feel better about our time. “Busy” becomes just another four-letter word.

Do any of these sound like you?

    • Feel a sense of lack, despite success in life or having done everything “right”
    • Struggle to articulate how you feel to others
    • Experience guilt about how you’re feeling
    • Have lost your way

What’s in a Word?

Words can be very powerful. They create narratives for us. They tell us a story about what we are seeing and experiencing in our lives. And, depending on the habits we have gotten into with our words, these words may even morph into a pattern for how we see the world.

Photo by Ravi Kant on Pexels.com

What am I talking about? Let me give you an example. I must spill something on a white shirt literally every time I wear one. I am sure there are spills on some of my other colored clothing too, but like clockwork there seems to be a coffee stain or something else colorful on every white piece of clothing I own. So, let’s say this happens and I say, “Natalie, you’re such an clutz! Why can’t you wear white once and not spill on yourself?”

Seems like a normal response to this right? Well, let’s compare that to, “Oh my goodness Natalie. Seems like spilling on your white clothes is just your go-to move” followed by a laugh. What I am getting at is how in the first comment I am devaluing myself as a person because of my behavior and in the second comment I am just making fun of my behavior. It’s a subtle difference in wording that makes a major difference in how we think and feel about ourselves.

I can’t tell you the number of times I have sat across from a client who is struggling with feelings of shame and low self-worth. It’s almost epidemic in our American culture, where we are marketed at from birth to death. And the underlying message from this is that the way we are isn’t good enough as is, so “Buy this product and you’ll be better!!!”. When this culture mixes in with saying things to ourselves and others like, “I am such a clutz!” instead of “Spilling was just an accident”, we alienate ourselves more and more. Self-talk that devalues the person can increase feelings of shame.

Photo by Viktoria Slowikowska on Pexels.com

So, why do we do this? Possibly because we were taught to. Or, because culture is so prone to use these concepts in marketing. Or even because once it is a habit in our thinking, we start to do it as second nature. I mean think about it, my comment to myself that I was an clutz for spilling on myself is not all that uncommon, is it? We say things like it all the time. Yet, words hold power. They define things and they narrowly begin to categorize things. So if I call myself names like that enough, it isn’t hard for me to start truly believing this. And this can lead to feeling uncomfortable or awkward when people compliment me, because those compliments aren’t in alignment with what I believe about myself.

I would challenge you this week to take a look at how you talk to yourself, to your friends, and to your family. You might even look at how you talk to others on social media. What phrases do you use? What message do they imply? Is that what you intended to say? I want you to start to notice the words and phrases that are your go-to’s and then think about what narrative those words are creating for you, telling you about yourself and your world.

Our stories are intricately a part of who we are, whether we are calling out the story and looking at it or not. Words are how we make up these stories and word choice is a very powerful thing. Just notice this week where the power is in your words. No need to change things (at least not yet). The first step in anything you want to address, much less change, is to recognize that it is there.

How to Be Kind to Yourself

It seems like such an intuitive thing to do, yet we are very challenged in our ability to stay kind towards ourselves. This form of self compassion seems to fly in the face of the internal mantras we have of judgmental self-evaluation, as a means to keep ourselves “on course“. Basically, we like our whips. We like to use self-critical evaluation as a way to stay on track.

This does not always serve us, however. Being kind to ourself is a form of self compassion that uses our first language, behavior. You know…how babies talk…by crying in order to get the adults in their life to meet their needs. This language of behavior is still our first language as adults. If we do kind things for ourselves the message we send to us is that we are worthy. We are worthy of investing our time in. We are worthy of investing our energy in. We are worthy of investing our love in.

Take a look at Dr. Natalie‘s video message this week on how you can be kind to yourself.
