Exhausted? Overwhelmed? Here’s the Solution – Love Yourself First!!!

Sometimes there are just people, times, or situations that really drain us of all we have to give. This is a tell tale sign that our input is not outweighing our output. We wouldn’t expect a car to drive 300 miles on an empty tank of gas, yet we often expect this of ourselves. Lets change that. Here are some things you can do:

1) EXTRA Self-Care This Week:

  • Get your body moving
  • Set boundaries on how much news you watch or social media you scroll through
  • Play games
  • Listen to music that gets your spirit lifted and your body grooving
  • Read a book
  • Dance like no one is watching
  • Do the things that bring you joy on a small scale or a big one
  • Just do them. Do lots of them. And do them over and over.

Emotional Exhaustion in large part comes from our inability to give more without replenishing ourselves first. Read that again and think about it. If you’re afflicted with the social conditioning that tells you your worth comes from how much you give of yourself, then you’ve known this kind of exhaustion. It’s a black hole. You can never give enough of yourself to satisfy this false ideal that once you’ve given enough you will arrive at your ultimate worth. Instead you keep giving until the point of overwhelm, not feeling worthy.

So invert this principle. Seriously. Invert this process of giving to others before yourself on its head. Love yourself first and foremost and watch what happens.

Which leads me to my second reminder to us for the week:

2) SELFISH is the New SELFLESS

I mean it. We have to throw out these ideas that we have to do things for others at a cost to ourselves. It creates a ledger of sorts. It has yourself in one column and others in another column. You start with a finite amount of you and quickly deplete your emotional energy when you give and give and give and give to others by taking and taking and taking and taking from your column on the ledger. You’re swiftly in debt, but only to yourself. And because you’re putting you last and others first, you remain in debt and keep creating more of it.

So…INVERT this. Instead of giving OF yourself first, give TO yourself first. Always.

  • Give yourself the LOVE you need, so you can love others
  • Give yourself the RESPECT you need, so you may respect others
  • Give yourself the TIME you need, so you have time for others

You see when we are full with what we need FIRST, we can give so much more. When we deplete ourselves by giving more to others than to ourselves, our worth inherently devalues. Yet our culture tells us that our worth is in this depletion of self to be selfless for others. Which honestly means you become yourself less.

I call BS!!! It’s simple math here (and those who know me, know math is not my favorite…so if I am pulling it out then I mean business). If we add to our worthiness by giving to ourselves first, there is more worth to be shared. If we take from our worthiness to give to others before ourselves, then eventually we will be depleted and devalue ourselves in the process.

We will be emotionally exhausted and eventually totally overwhelmed. And we will start to literally be unable to emotionally empathize with others. To see their point of view. To imagine walking a mile in their shoes. When we lose sight of these things the value of our giving diminishes more and more. Not to mention we become more and more awful to each other, the more and more we feel dehumanized ourselves.

If we add to our worthiness by giving to ourselves first, there is more worth to be shared. If we take from our worthiness to give to others before ourselves, then eventually we will be depleted and devalue ourselves in the process.

Natalie M. Marr, Psy.D., LP

So take a minute. I’m serious! Take a few if you need to. Think about how you can do some extra self care this week. Write it down! Yup. On an old fashioned piece of paper. Maybe a post-it. And stick those ideas in all the places you frequent. The bathroom mirror. Near the steering wheel on your car. In your daily planner. On the refrigerator. Be sure to have these ideas readily available and nagging at you this week so you remember to do them. THEN…watch what happens. When you give to yourself first you have more to give.

How to Beat the “I Know Better”s

“I know better!” How many times have you uttered those words? And how many times have you been frustrated, angry, maybe even a little rageful that you did it again anyway? You are in good company my friend, because we all have been caught in that cycle.

The question really is how to get out of the cycle. I have been asked this so many times in my practice that I recognize that this is a learning opportunity for all of us, not just those in therapy. The truth of the matter is this is part of our human wiring, based in our brain. We repeat old behavior patterns when we aren’t even thinking about it. Why do you ask? Because our brain thinks for us.

That’s right! Our brain has a way to rewire itself so that it can do things without even asking our conscious awareness for input. So pesky patterns first develop from a behavior we thought met a particular need. We repeated the behavior enough that now our brain does it despite our “knowing better.”

Want to learn how to rewire your brain and stop these pesky patterns? Watch the video below.

Making Peace With Our Mistakes

Do you ever find yourself making the same mistake over and over? It can feel maddening. You know that you are doing it, yet you can’t seem to stop yourself. Do you know why you repeat the same mistakes over and over? Did you know this is a normal part of being human? You aren’t crazy…you are changing. And repeating something over and over usually means there is an underlying story we have been telling ourselves about our lives that no longer serves us, so we need to uncover and change it.

Take a look at Dr. Natalie’s Vlog describing why this happens and how we can make peace with this and work towards changing it.

How to Get Unstuck

Ever feel like you’re stuck? Life is going well looking from the outside in, yet you feel like there is something that is missing. Something more that you want and just can’t put your finger on. Well, Dr. Marr breaks down in this video how being stuck in this manner can occur and what you can do to find out what is causing the feeling.

It’s Good to Remember We Are Only Human

We tend to be so difficult on ourselves. Like I talked about last week, we are always looking to use our whips on ourselves as a means to correct our behaviors, as if this actually works as our best tool. Let me break some news to you…punishing ourselves IS NOT our best tool for changing behavior. In many ways, it is the least helpful. What happens when we are punished (even by ourselves) is we learn to avoid the punishment…not how to do the thing better that we messed up that resulted in our punishing ourselves.

I try to help break down in this video a skill I have used for years, based in Person Centered Theory. Its a basic set of questions that help you look at what you and/or others are doing, through a much different lens. Instead of whipping yourself for what you are doing wrong, it is looking at what you are doing more holistically. Getting ideas for what is going well, as much as what is not. Take a look.

https://youtu.be/762j3oITBRE

Here are those basic questions again:

  1. What is working?
  2. What isn’t working?
  3. What to keep the same?
  4. What to do differently?

My example here is how to do this in parenting, but these questions can work in any area of your life. Try them…and tell me about it by replying below in the comments. I’d love to hear your thoughts on how these work for you.

How to Be Kind to Yourself

It seems like such an intuitive thing to do, yet we are very challenged in our ability to stay kind towards ourselves. This form of self compassion seems to fly in the face of the internal mantras we have of judgmental self-evaluation, as a means to keep ourselves “on course“. Basically, we like our whips. We like to use self-critical evaluation as a way to stay on track.

This does not always serve us, however. Being kind to ourself is a form of self compassion that uses our first language, behavior. You know…how babies talk…by crying in order to get the adults in their life to meet their needs. This language of behavior is still our first language as adults. If we do kind things for ourselves the message we send to us is that we are worthy. We are worthy of investing our time in. We are worthy of investing our energy in. We are worthy of investing our love in.

Take a look at Dr. Natalie‘s video message this week on how you can be kind to yourself.

https://youtu.be/qVvzqrDKSOk

Why Practicing Self Compassion is Gold

Many of us aren’t even aware of what self compassion is. But we can guess it’s some of that hippie dippy mushy stuff that therapists talk about. Not so much. This strategy is much more strength based than you think and is as precious as Gold. Take a look at Dr. Natalie’s Vlog this week to learn more.

https://youtu.be/XUTll4sIvFM

You may want to head over to her blog this week as well, to learn even more on the skill of self-compassion.
